If the planet descends into WW3, the nations were divided a long time ago.

It is not likely but it is not altogether impossible. There is a massive buildup occurring right on Cyprus' doorstep all because of Russia's escalation and announcement that it will be holding Naval Exercises between Cyprus and Syria. Obviously there is no other place they can hold their 'exercise'. There is a believe that this is the prelude that Russia will be landing ground forces in Syria, just like Ukraine.

Very dangerous but Putin likes to play Russian Roulette.

I don't think so RW. DAESH have a deranged ideology. They are brutal thugs. They will kill and plunder.

We can't sit around and watch them do this without attempting to do something about it.

Syria has given Russia the opportunity to demonstrate that it has a significance in world politics, it also opens her to more contact with the aggressor who is in need of the same attention.

While "we" were "saved" by Putin's quick thinking when "red lines" were drawn a little while ago, again but redirected, the same effort for collective action may be drawn with such historic adversaries allies; a little tail, wagging the dog if you will, in time for elections, in Russia, as well as the United States.
