Biden signs Executive Order declaring Russia a National Security Threat

Biden on Thursday signed an executive order declaring a "national emergency" over the threat from Russia, as his administration slapped new sanctions on the country.

The U.S. Department of State said it is expelling 10 officials from Russia’s bilateral mission.

"Today, we announced actions to hold the Russian Government to account for the SolarWinds intrusion, reports of bounties on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, and attempts to interfere in the 2020 U.S. elections," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

A-Russian government official has warned sanctions the U.S. is reportedly set to impose on Moscow heighten the prospect of confrontation between the nations.

Moscow's first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyanskiy, made these remarks following reports Russian officials and companies will be hit with punitive measures.

These are reportedly due to be implemented to punish the Kremlin for a cybersecurity hack on U.S. government departments, targeting SolarWinds software, and interference in the 2020 U.S. election.

President of Ukraine Says Country "Will become a member" of NATO

This announcement was deliberately timed to stab Russia in the face, just days before a "summit" between US (Illegitimate) President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

For years, Russia has made clear that entry of Ukraine into NATO would mean war.

Just lask week, in an interview with NBC News, Putin re-stated that allowing Ukraine into NATO would then cause the positioning of US Missile Defenses at a location which would only afford Moscow "seven (7) to ten (10) Minutes warning to defend itself against inbound US missiles." Putin went on to say this "is a red line for us."

That quote is repeated in a story on Ukrinform, a Ukrainian multimedia platform for broadcasting, in a story TODAY which reports:

In addition, according to Interfax, the Russian president said that there were no guarantees that Ukraine would fail to join NATO and that U.S. statements claiming that President Biden had not spoken to Zelensky about granting Kyiv a plan to join NATO could be linked to a future summit of the presidents of Russia and the United States.

As Putin noted, if Ukraine joins NATO, "the flight time of missiles from Kharkiv or Dnipropetrovsk to central Russia and Moscow will be reduced to 7-10 minutes", calling it a "red line" for the Russian authorities.

BREAKING Russian naval vessel fires warning shots at UK Warship!

The Black Sea Fleet, together with border guards, stopped the violation of the Russian border by the British destroyer Defender at Cape Fiolent.

Precautionary fire was opened, and the Su-24M carried out warning bombing.

As noted by the Russian military, at 11:52 the British ship crossed the Russian border and entered the territorial sea at Cape Fiolent for three kilometers.

He was warned about the use of weapons in the event of a border violation, but the destroyer crew did not react.

At 12:06 and 12:08 the border patrol ship fired warning shots. At 12:19 pm, the Su-24m aircraft performed precautionary bombing (4 OFAB-250) along the course of the defender URO destroyer, the message says.


"At 12:23 pm, by joint actions of the Black Sea Fleet and the Border Service of the FSB of Russia, the destroyer URO Defender left the borders of the territorial sea of the Russian Federation," the department concluded.

Not wishing to get into a prolonged "debate" on the issue but dropping bombs is a pretty provocative thing to do. It's more usual to have a chat on the radio, over a cup of tea - sorta thing. You do get the impression, from events that have occurred in the Black Sea and eastern Ukraine skies over the past 6 years, that the Russian military in Crimea and surrounds are a bunch of ill disciplined cowboys. There lies a path to war of course.

From a diplomatic (not to mention moral) point of view. Russia seized a quite large chunk (Sudentenland) of another country called Ukraine (Czechoslovakia), by military force and then decided to call it part of Mother Russia (Germany). The biggest land grab in Europe since WW2. It's actions were entirely illegal under international law. It now continues military action in Donbas in an effort to foment destabilisation of the country. 14000 fatalities - so far. I don't believe anybody died in the events which precipitated Russia's action. Which was all about Sevastapol of course.

My view? The perception of Barack Obama. IMHO, a man who's principal achievement was advancing his own career with rhetoric but who, with his lack of action in Syria and effective capitulation to Khamenei came to be regarded - quite correctly - as a push over. Biden comes across as deja vu (with early dementia) and strikes me as being on a similar path. Which, given who’s pulling the strings, makes sense.

Then again - anything's better than Trump apparently.
