Syllouris urges Greek Cypriots to boycott crossings

EUROPEAN Party leader Demetris Syllouris yesterday urged Greek Cypriots to boycott the north during the Christmas holidays in protest at the breakaway regime’s unilateral action on the Ledra Street crossing.

The call came weeks after Turkish Cypriot authorities began works on their side of the demarcation line with the building of a bridge under which military patrols would take place. The government initially dismissed the move as a PR stunt, and the opening of the checkpoint – with great symbolic value – has been put on hold indefinitely.

To protest against the Turkish side’s actions, Syllouris yesterday proposed that all parties ask “Cypriot citizens not to visit the occupied areas during the holiday season.”

This would constitute a “minimal reaction to the escalating provocations by the occupation regime,” he added.

“The occupation forces in Cyprus are continuing their provocative and aggressive behaviour, which reveals their true intentions.

“If we cannot beat them at the PR game, we should react in other ways,” he noted.

But his unusual suggestion earned little sympathy with the other parties. Yesterday DISY spokesman Tasos Mitsopoulos dismissed the idea as “unrealistic… for want of a stronger word.”
“Aside from the fact that it could never work, this plea is extremely inappropriate because it puts the burden on the people, expecting them to take on a responsibility that is not theirs.

“The resolution of this matter [Ledra Street] is the responsibility of our government alone.”
The European Party was formed in June through the merger of New Horizons with elements of the European Democrats. Syllouris, at the time a renegade deputy – having been ousted from DISY – was elected chairman of the new group.

It is the only party that rejects the Annan plan lock stock and barrel, and typically voices extreme views on the Cyprus problem.
