Ahem

Suppose a respectable opinion poll found that most Syrians are in favour of Assad remaining as president? would that not be major news to you Paphitis? Especially as the finding would go against your the dominant narrative about what is happening in Syria and choosing to speak on behalf of Syrians.

When coverage of an unfolding drama ceases to be consistent with your views and turns into a propaganda war instead, inconvenient facts get suppressed. So it is with the results of a recent YouGov Siraj poll on Syria commissioned by The Doha Debates, funded by the Qatar Foundation I put to you. You have taken a very hawkish lines against Syria and Assad – who's side of the story you will not even listen to - so it was good that The Doha Debates published the poll on its website just for you Paphitis. The pity is that you will probably ignore it, like some of the western media outlets you choose to listen to, and from those government that you will only listen to who have called for Assad to go.

The key finding was that while most Arabs and western leaders outside of Syria feel the president should resign for their own reasons, attitudes in the country are different. Some 55% of Syrians want Assad to stay, motivated by fear of civil war.

This was in 2012!!!

Paphitis:
Saudi is not what you think it is.

How long did you live there Paph? In the four plus years that I lived there and outside the major cities, where all this development takes place, I saw Saudi’s living in abject poverty. Saud does not give all Saudi men equal land .......... most I saw were on arid plots of land with no services and the houses were corrugated steel sheets and earth bricks and they were scratching a living.

Paph: With all due respects I think your views of both Saudi and the USA are divorced from reality! But you are entitled to your opinion.

The highest standard of living in Africa, was enjoyed by the Libyans and their people got all the benefits you attribute to the Saudi’s and more. The men didn’t just get land ...... they got a house as well (and a modern house at that!). Then the USA and its NATO puppets decided to get rid of Ghadaffi and replace him with a leader who was more compliant with what the US wanted ...... and look at the bloody mess they made of that!

Whether the Gulf States are supplying other groups is highly contentious because we can apply a lot of pressure on KSA, Qatar, UAE and Oman. But let's say it's true. Do you blame them for not wanting to rip Assad's head off?

You conveniently miss any reference to Yemen! The people threw out by ‘democratic’ elections, the old dictator favoured by the West. He fled to Saudi and the Saudi’s are killing thousands of Yemenie civilians trying to return him to power. Who supplies the bombs and the aircraft to do this ....... your friends in the USA via Israel. Proved because some of the munitions dropped can only be carried by a particular aircraft (F-18?) and Saudi does not have them ...... they are Israeli aircraft.

The same is happening in Syria. The Israeli’s carry out raids into Syria on an almost daily basis not against ISIS, but against Syrian Government targets. Once again Israel/ US and NATO interference in a Sovereign countries affairs to promote their own commercial benefits.

How anyone can consider the US as being innocent in all this beats me! The US has never been invaded and yet it has defence expenditure equal to that of the rest of the World put together! It boasts almost a thousand military basis outside the US and in 150 different countries. Russia and China have a couple between them and yet the US sees them as a threat to the USA?

Come on ..... the US sees them as a threat to their economic interests. Simple common sense says that the US and NATO countries are the biggest threat to world peace and the biggest supporters/suppliers of terrorists.

Oh yes indeed Max. Unfortunately, the poll was proven to be a load of baloney!

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17155349

It was an internet survey of the Arab world by YouGov Siraj in December. It covered just more than 1,000 people in 18 countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
The central question was: "In your opinion should Syria's President Assad resign?"
Across the whole region, the overall finding was that 81% of people polled thought President Assad should go.
But the polling company also stated: "Respondents in Syria are more supportive of their president. 55% do not believe Assad should resign."
Looking closely at the survey report, it does not say explicitly how many of the 1,000 people who responded were from Syria. But it does say that 211 were polled in the Levant region, 46% of whom were in Syria.
Doing the sums, this suggests that only 97 people took part. When the BBC checked with YouGov Siraj for the exact breakdown, the company said that in fact there were 98 respondents from Syria (the difference arising from the fact that averages given in the survey report were rounded).

I've been based in Jeddah for 2 months now (technically been there for only 3 weeks) and I haven't seen too much poverty.

And I don't have too many complaints so far, but the place is not perfect for Westerner to say the least. But it is developing fast, as money does not seem to be much of a problem for the Saudis and we are very well looked after by the Saud family as they partly own the business I work now for with the other part owned by Qatari interests.

Technically speaking, they pay my wages.

And you want anyone to believe and support the opposite. The result is upwards of 200K dead, several million refugees and now ISIS.

Then you want everyone to accept and pay for refugees and throw scorn on anyone who has an opposite opinion (which could have prevented it all) for not be sensitive to their needs.

You can't suppress all the Sunnis, Christians, and Kurds forever and expect to get away with it Max.

I suppose those not in Assad's favour want a new beginning. That wouldn't be happening if all was good with Assad my good friend.

And don't tell me about all the dead. we know who is responsible for all the dead, and DAESH are only responsible for a small percentage.
