On arriving back to work Monday last week, had a message to call a customer who had placed a large order on our webside.

Narurally I called Mr Malik and discussed his order as well as method of payment.

He persistently asked for a discount and requested full technical spec on all goods ordered, in spite of the fact that goods do carry a full spec on line.

He specifically wanted to know what 3- phase electricity meant and other tec questions.

A big order that obviously attracted my full attention.
One call to him lasted 38 minutes. Many calls followed.

On receiving my online mobile bill I noticed a charge of £161.69, calls not covered by my all inclusive, I called my service provider and to my utter shock I was told that this number directed my calls to a premium rate number costing me £1.50 per minute.

Just when you think that you have seen it all, the crooks find a way to con you.

Service providers are complicit in this scam.

Any number that get redirected (unknown to the caller) should first be preceded with a recorded message telling the caller so, the charges applied and if they want to proceed or not.

This way all these F telephones scams will be stopped, but since the Service provider is also ripping you off why would he. This should be reported to the regulatory authority, you should refuse to pay this bill citing, the trades description act.

In the UK its also 076 numbers. It is a total scam. This consumer site suggests contacting the Premium rate regulator.

so are 0845 numbers when you call them from mobiles. national banks use that one. it is a disgrace. we have the conservatives to thank for that for privatising the phone system.

They set up and regulate premium rate phone numbers in the UK.

Anyone setting up a premium rate phone number must register with them and adhere to their code of practice. Obviously, you have been scammed and the scammers should be shut down.

Credit cards can reverse these transactions which is why that is my preferred means.

I got duped by a Greek car Hire company in Corfu recently.

I had a punctured tyre which they charged me €195 euros for + 23% VAT + €40 admin. The charges went through my VISA and I was willing to accept it because the rules were explained beforehand.

But then I made 3 phone calls to get an itemized bill actually specifying the damage caused to the vehicle because my personal insurance company was demanding it in order to re-reimburse me. I got absolutely no service and refused to give me what I needed because they couldn't care less because they got my money.

So I called my Financial Institution and on that basis they refunded my money. They would have got the money from the car hire firm.

Serves them right too!

The onus is on them to comply or else.

Just a quick update, after spending a considerable amount of time calling THREE, they have refused to offer more than a £20.00 credit.
You live and learn.

As from now I will be very careful when calling any number. Scams seem to be on the increase here in the UK.

This morning I received a letter by post, apparently from some non existing solicitors firm, offering me a 50% discount if I settled a bill from a ...bank!!! Never heard of the bank either.
