One Microsoft oversight is when you upgrade from 8.1 to win 10 it sets the default shutdown to sleep mode draining power....not sure what happens from 7 to 10...
You need to get into power options and change the setting what happens when you push the switch to shutdown...change the option from sleep to shutdown....
It happen to me when I upgraded my surface pro....

This is crucial on portable devices...check your settings

Got 6 laptops in the house 2 each running 7' 8.1 and 10,

Bought a cheap hp laptop in the uk. No touch screen. It came with 8.1 but immediately asked to install 10. Went for it. Looks ok. This will be used as a special machine for my daughters to do homework on. No playing.

Also have an Hp pavilion 360. Very low powered chip. That had 8.1. I went for the upgrade. Got faster boot time and many apps load faster.Battery life seems better. As it is a 2 in 1 device i like the ability to go to either tablet / touchscreen or desktop mode though my machine does not do it automatically when I flip the screen as it apparently lacks the hardware to detect the flip. I am not yet sure about Edge. Better than IE but not sure about benefit over chrome, which i can run on the iPad as well as windows pcs.

I have 2 more 8.1 laptops. One an HP x2 split. The other is a an hp with an AMD 10 in it and 8GB RM, 1.5TB disk. Wife uses it for work. I am waiting before doing them. Will do the x2 first. It looked a good idea at the time has issues with a dicky plug and socket for attaching and detaching the screen. I will see how it goes before doing the upgrade on the wife's machine. Need to check compatibility for her work.

Finally i have two w7 machine, a samsung And an HP dm1 small laptop. The samsung is plugged in to the telly. Touch pad is iffy so it has a mouse plugged in. The samsung had the little get W10 update icon but it does not appear on the hp. Not sure about upgrading them. Might have to go down the USB upgrade route. I will wait a bit as I read w10 is not yet fully backwards compatible with some older w7 pc.

Am actually tempted to get a w10 tablet (or a reasonable 'droid device if there is such a thing) for truly portable use. Want a micro sd card slot for easy load up or usb for capability to plug in storage and the ability to run full sized programs is quite appealing as i find most iOs and droid apps a bit limited.

Just a brief update...

Windows 10 is becoming very stable and robust after the latest updates.

But IMO, if you have an old PC, I think it's better to stay with Win7. On my 3 year old laptop I had some driver problems, biggest problem being it can no longer detect the DVD-ROM!

However, it's very good with my new PC, which had Win10 pre-installed. :)

Edge is still a piece of sh*t, and I ended up putting it aside...

Task view and +desktops are nice, especially if you have a big monitor.

Windows is pants!

Switched to Mac a long time ago, even though it's not perfect, it's operating system is more refined, more thought out and user friendly. I didn't think any of that mattered, but after experiencing how swift the Mac functions, I wouldn't as much consider a Windows machine ever again.

Do yourself a favour and make the switch...you know it makes sense...! 8)

 During the Vista saga?

Win7 and now Win10 are OK OS. Give Win10 a try.

I knew I'd regret it!!!!

I was bullied into getting this going - it had started downloading itself and dared me to stop the download - which I didn't. :(

Now, I can't find my "Paint" program to make a drawing.

Does anyone know where it would have hidden it, please?

Oh, thanks umit - that's great! :D

I followed the instructions and did 'pin start' and 'Paint' went into the box - lovely!

But, from there, I found that you can drag and drop it to your desktop and bypass the slightly lengthier way the youtube suggests (as a further shortcut).

Hmm ... all it's done is create more work for me so far. But undoing some of the things it's hidden has meant my desktop is looking more like its old self again! :)

Anyway, it's still very annoying that the new bar on the bottom of my screen is so wide that I have to scroll up to get to my 'send' e-mail button and similar commands that are usually near the bottom! :|
