Sewerage Tax Bill - Tenant or landlord pays?

Postby dodo » Wed Jul 15, 2015 2:57 pm

I rent a place and just received a bill for sewerage tax that is shown as calculated as % of the value of the place in 1980.

In the rental agreement I see no specific mentioning of sewerage tax. I am supposed according to contact to pay for used services, water, electricity , garbage removal which of course make sense. Now I have also noticed that every water bill I receive includes some amount for use of sewage system.

So, before calling my Cypriot landlord who will undoubtedly insist I have to pay it  , I'd like to know if someone has experience in these matters, who would be legally liable to pay for this sewerage tax bill?

Many thanks in advance!

I think you should go to a real estate agency and ask.

Would the British government pay me to teach set theory and analysis in Cuba?

I’ll happily thump you all the way to Cuba if you don’t shut up!

I am guessing the reference to 'set theory' is a tsukoui way of suggesting that 'sewerage' is an inherent part (sub set) of 'water services' and thus is covered in the contract as 'water', but with tsukoui who really knows ?

None of you guys rent and/or pay this bill then? :)

If you do, or if maybe you're a real estate agent as GetReal kindly suggested, your advice would be kindly appreciated.

I'm glad the police are working for free, that's just what the Irish had to do on the plantations.

Yesterday evening I actually wrote an email as well to the Sewerage board to ask them to clarify as well, I wasn't expecting to reply this month, let alone after one day.

Below is their reply. According to the person, and if I understood correctly :| (English is not my 1st language) , I should not be the one paying it ? Any thoughts? :?

Dear Customer

Referring to your email below please be informed that according to the Law annual sewerage charges are charges connected to the infrastructure and maintenance cost of the system and address the legal owner of the tittle deed. These charges are based on the assessed value of the property as that given from the Lands and Survey Department In accordance with the Law notice for the imposition of rates, the due date of payment and the place of payment is published in the Official Gazette and local newspapers..Additionally and only for the purpose of facilitating our customers a statement of account is forwarded to the postal address of the owner as that appears in the official records of the Land & Survey Department.

An additional charge named usage charge/service charge appears on your water bill only if your property is connected to the system and is based on the water consumption .

You are kindly requested to contact us again with the details of the statement of account you received so we can advice you further.

Elena has replied to you very accurately. First of all was the bill on your name???
The owner pays that bill. If the house is connected to the system, you pay sewerage system usage fee, and that appears separately on your water consumption bill.

NB.The owner will pay that bill for about 20 years. In Nicosia we are already at ~ the 16th.

Well, actually, the water has never been transferred onto my name, we agreed not to, so both water bills and this sewerage bill came under owner's/landlord's name.
