Oh boy you are a bit slow today.

How many Greek Businesses are registered in the RoC? These are not your average SME either. The total net worth of these corporations could far exceed the entire RoC GDP.

I dunno Paphiti, can you give me some official stats please.

Maybe we offer them something your precious lala land cant. :?

Yes you offer them low tax thresholds whereas the tax rates in Greece make that country unviable for a large business which can move its assets to another country with lower thresholds saving them millions.

Which brings us back to this agreement with the EZ. They know Greece has the highest tax rates in the EU. They also know that Greece needs investment and it also needs these businesses in Greece to be paying tax to Greece. But they are making this impossible.

I don't know what the official statistics are. All I know is that Cyprus is being used as a tax haven.

Do you know how many Greek Ferries operating in Greece are actually flying the RoC Flag?

They are headquartered in Cyprus as a registered business and pay tax tin Cyprus from Greek earnings. These are Greek owned and operated businesses worth several Billions.

Besides that:
i do know one thing, because i live here that's why.

Of the small community expat Brits own many small businesses here, from electricians to construction to beer brewing and Scuba diving.
They bring that little extra to the Republic.

Whereas the Greek resident community is trying to worm their way into government jobs, the military or something state related.
They offer virtually fu** all.

Are you really sure about that?

Let me give you a little tip. There are many wealthy Greeks now living in Australia and USA and you would be amazed at their success in business, education and their contributions to society there. But they have also had a few decades to establish themselves and in the beginning they had to "worm" their way into jobs as well. They worked hard and made huge sacrifices to get where they are and in a foreign land where the language was another obstacle for them.

The Greeks in Cyprus are only a recent phenomenon but don't speak too soon because I can see them getting ahead very quickly and opening their own small businesses. The Brits have been in Cyprus for a longer time and usually they are from the middle classes and many are retirees with pensions and superannuation, whereas the Greeks going to Cyprus are probably a lot younger and are there for a new beginning and better life much like those who migrated to AUS and USA and own about 10 rentals now. They will outdo the locals, because those that migrate away from home usually work hard because they have sacrificed already.

No Paphiti, their backround wont allow it, they only understand their system back home.
Now, if you're talking about 2nd or 3rd generation Greek immigrants, then yes, you have a point.

Greek restaurants and bribery for starters mate. Just like in good old Ozz and the great US of A.

Oh really?

Well their system back home is not that much different to Cyprus so they should be fine.

You still need to explain the remarkable successes of Greeks in Australia, USA and Canada. Most of them are not struggling at all and did very well for themselves.

You might be renting from a Greek Landlord real soon!

And no, I am talking about the first generation. They are the ones who sacrificed a lot and set their families up. From there, we all know that money breeds more money and some of the 2nd and 3rd generations have not wasted the sacrifice of their parents and grandparents and have progressed even more.

No, you can only do so much with a terrible ruling class and that applies to both Cyprus and Greece.

It's not really the little man's fault but it is always the little man who suffers the most and pays the bride.

Greeks, if you ask them, are fed up with all the nonsense there. They know their system is corrupt, and they know their ruling classes are rotten to the bone. They want change just like you do. They also put up a pretty brave fight.

They also know that Greece faces an uphill battle and they want to do something about it. The young really want to work and they certainly work hard albeit in tourism because nothing else is on offer at the moment. Some will be forced to abandon Greece. Very sad.
