What do you say Tim, would you give the idea to Cuba? At least then they'd have a head start...

China cheats even on patented products.
Forget about patenting it. Just produce the thing yourself and start selling fast.
If the idea is good then within the 5 years that most patents are protected you would have made enough profit to pay you off.
Notice there are many wankers watching the patents. If you patent the idea and don't put it in practice within 5 years, then they will steal it from you legally.
Don't try to sell your idea either.

Pyro is right,

Patents are worth it if you have the money to protect them.

Many corporations willfully violate patents because they know the little man who holds the patent could never afford to claim his rights.

Trade marks are more effective if there is a fast move to associate the product with the name. The association when entrenched in the public consciousness is far more valuable, it is what they call branding in marketing. Coke a Cola is more valuable as a name than a flavor formula.

I often thought to patent the wheel, just as a joke. It would also be a legal challenge to write up the description that must accompany the patent drawings.

You can not patent "an idea". Not an abstract idea. You can only patent a product or a process (something tangible) and you have to show it works for the intended purpose.

i had an idea once. create a tv that is 3D. it would lay flat and with holograms would produce 3D holograms. if you are watching football it would have the same effect as if being at the stadium. you could see the whole field all the players in a 3D hologram. imagine watching a good porn flick with my 3D tv or a regular movie where you would have a birds eye view of the scene.

This is a one off patent that stands to make millions.

I'm not joking.
