In our history lessons in the UK, not Greece, we were taught that the Turks and Mongols shared a common central Asian area out of which they expanded between the 6th and 13th centuries and that one branch, the Seljuks, established themselves in a westward expansion into Persia and Byzantium.
These days we hear how the central Asian republics are called Turkic republics and I recall Ozal trying to establish ties with them back in the 90s and stressing the "common ancestry".
