Breaking and very unexciting news brought to you by the Zizziro News Agency...

Another resolution of the EP, containing a para on CY, being reported today... ... ...

"... Cyprus

MEPs call on the leaders of both communities to resume talks, under the auspices of the UN Secretary General, on reunifying Cyprus. Turkey must begin to withdraw its troops and transfer the Famagusta area to the UN, while the Republic of Cyprus should open the port of Famagusta under EU customs supervision and allow Turkish Cypriots to trade with the EU in a legal manner they say. Turkey should also “refrain from further settlement of Turkish citizens in the occupied areas of Cyprus”, MEPs add. ..."

Why are they NOT saying that Famagusta must be transferred back to the Republic of Cyprus?

Who got it in their head that it is acceptable to give Famagusta to the world instead of its rightful owner?

are you ready for this.

The European Parliament reiterated its strong support for the reunification of Cyprus, on the basis of a fair, comprehensive and viable settlement for both communities, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the values and principles on which the EU is founded, for a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with single sovereignty, single international legal personality and single citizenship, with political equality between the two communities and equal opportunities for all its citizens

Oh dear... oh dear, oh dear.

Turkey throwing the toys out of the pram in response to the Backwards Progress Report and to the EP Resolution.

According to the Fam Gazette...

"... TURKEY has reacted with anger at the Resolution of the European Parliament (EP) regarding the European Commission's 2014 Turkey Progress Report, which was adopted in the EP Plenary today.

MEP's approved a resolution on the progress of reform in Turkey in 2014 that called on Turkey to begin to withdraw its troops from Cyprus.

A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara Wednesday night stated:

The EP resolution, which was drafted this year by Mrs.Kati Piri, Dutch member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, confirmed that Turkey is a strategic partner of the EU with its role in cooperation in the fields of economy, energy security and foreign policy, as already indicated in the 2014 Enlargement Strategy of the European Commission.

We continuously express to the EU authorities that Turkey sees accession to the EU as a strategic choice and resolutely continues to work in the direction of full membership. In order to reinforce and encourage this resolute stance, we expect the European Parliament to be fair and objective in its resolutions on Turkey and to voice its criticism and expectations in a balanced manner.

However, the EP resolution, which contained a balanced and constructive critical tone in its first draft, has unfortunately been changed into a one-sided text far from being objective in the process of adoption by the EP Foreign Affairs Committee.

This attitude continued in the plenary of the EP, and thus one of the most unfortunate resolutions on Turkey has been adopted by the EP. It is obvious that this Resolution will not contribute to our cooperation with the EP.

The frequency of the resolutions against Turkey and their content with prejudiced statements and criticism undermine our relations with the EP, which took office after the elections held in May 2014. They also aggravate concerns that the EP is unwilling to include Turkey in the EU project.

We do not accept this resolution and will return it to the EP as it contains unfounded allegations against our country in many fields. ..."

You can see the wheeling and dealing behind the wording. Yes, give back Famagusta, but in a face saving manner, ie to the UN not its owners, open the port, but under EU monitoring, you can imagine the arguments back and forth to arrive at this text. Politicians are funny people.
