Was Greece, the orchestrator of the Turkish invasion, one of those NATO countries ?

Greece was part of the play, the orchestrator's were the US and Britain.

Indeed, all of them involved are NATO countries.

"Your going to be my friend and we are going to have our military in your country, to (NOT) protect you or we are going to kill you." --- Its insane!

Once again you must ask yourself why!

Cyprus was the sacrificial lamb to Greece and Turkey. Why?

Was it because we were on the outer and a little to cosy with the Warsaw Pact countries?

Do you think it would still play out the same way if we were in NATO? Mmmm I wonder!

So Greece can be in NATO and have and maintain good relations with Russia.

Cyprus can not be in NATO or have good relations with Russia.

Greece and Turkey are in NATO and have poor relations with each other to the point where they are on occasions on the verge of war.

Yeah, it all makes sense. No need to wonder or ask why.

Cyprus a young country with an inexperienced leader tried to make Cyprus a neutral nonaligned nation, the Switzerland of the eastern Med. It couldn't happen and never will. Cyprus only stands to gain by being part of NATO. It would probably solve all of its internal problems and if it had joined in the 1960's the Turk invasion would not have happened nor would the coup..

ocean man you is wrong. he tried to play russia against america thinking he would get an advantage and burnt himself. by joining the opressors of course cyprus will gain but the question is do cypriots wish to reward america after what they did to cyprus in the 60s and 70s.
makarios had a plan agreed in 1973, if he accpeted that there would have been no coup and no invasion. he did not agree. the fault is makarios and makarios only for not accepting the agreement. he said i did not sign an agreement in 1960 to exclude enosis to sign another one excluding enosis again. the trouble with people like you is you cannot see the truth if it was a train hurtling towards you at 100 miles an hour.

there wouldn't be any need for an agreement in 73, re pelo firfiri, who would give a rats ass for the tc if cyprus was in nato? and yes makarios should have stayed a priest instead of playing byzantine politics with the ameriklanous

...from his own experience, the man Makarios recognised that Enosis, to Greece was folly. He was a citizen of the world, a great Statesman, if there was no Makarios who would have kept Cyprus whole?

It may be said that he played the powers, i say thank-goodness, with the non-aligned movement, the world took one step away from a Cold War with its nuclear proliferation; it was not a matter of picking "sides".

what do you mean rw " thank-goodness, with the non-aligned movement, the world took one step away from a Cold War with its nuclear proliferation"...the west had cyprus where they wanted it, with or without makarios.

...but the non-aligned movement did give the rest of the world a pause, and some time to think. In any case, the west did not have Cyprus where they wanted it, it was not divided, it would have been.

Let's not overstate his Statesmanship.

A Statesman is a leader who united a country. Makarios inadvertently polarized division which led to a Coup and an invasion.

Being a good ethical person does not qualify one as a Statesman.

He played a dangerous game with the Warsaw Pact and NATO and came out second best. There was no way NATO was going to let this priest bring the Soviets into their Southern Flank.
