" That is an awful disease. Bloody awful and so common."
It was way back in 1963 when I met for the first time a young man, a couple of years older than my self, I was 17 at the time and used to breakfast in a Cafe near my home in South London owned by a Greek Cypriot.
A handsome young man built like a tank, vey friendly and full of jokes, taking the mickey of my long hair in a freindly sort of way.
A few Sundays later I was taken aback when this young man was introduced to my sister by the Cafe owner. They got married soon afterwards, all of us liked this young man immensely, a jovial charachter as well as being originaly from a small village near mine in Paphos.
He wasnt just a brother in law but a real mate, we worked together for years until his return in Cyprus in the late 80s. He loved his drink too so we were ....made for each other.
A few years back we noticed that "C " was becoming forgetfull soon after my sisters, his wife, death due to cancer. He was devastated as indeed the entire family.
They only had one daughter but she gave them 4 grandchildren.
I begun noticing Cs lapse of memory, the whole family had also noticed, alas he was soon diagnosed with dimentia.
On recent visits I would always call C , he always recognized my voice on the phone , a familiar sound stretching back more than 50 years, but just could not remember my name, I would give him 3 or 4 different names but on mentioning J he would joyfully recall my name.
I always see him when in Cyprus, he has no problem remembering who Im but remembering my name is a task beyond him. We were so close and yet he forgets my name, there again he only has one daughter and he forgets hers too.
A dreadful disease for which as yet there is no cure.
I joke with C saying things like " ate re me mas peripezis gamoto !! He will get worse in time so they tell us....
