reply to Lordo:

...hard to put Makarios in that group, he changed, but it was his mistakes which brought Cyprus to the brink. What is true, is that Cypriots were betrayed, not Cypriots alone, but all of Mankind along with them.

Then again, what was he to do, given who was behind this, the place where Cyprus was situated in the Cold War? Would Cypriots have enjoyed the nuclear weapons that came with being not non-aligned? Without Makarios this island would have been torn in two, it is another reason why it is unfair to judge him a "Greek".

...indeed, it should not be hard to have the Treaty of Guarantee revoked, Cyprus must agree, and so too the three who have blood soaking their copies of it. Greece does the right thing, it is up to Turkey to follow, so too the British, if they can digest the truth of their own failures. Cyprus needs no Guarantor. Despite its so-called Guarantors, Cyprus still exists; says a lot about Cyprus, says a lot about Cypriots.

Turkey negated the agreement.

Now everything is up or negotiation, so the Treaty does not apply.

And the GCs need to vote for it so good luck!

rw he continued to play america against russia for his megalomania. he should have behaved like the president of the country he was elected to serve. they tried to kill him 4 times and yet he did not ask for the greak officers to be removed.

as to the guarantees 75 percent of tcs are not ready to remove guarantees. till they are there cannot be any change. asking for the change now is just plain stupid. when a patient arrives at the doctors they are not asked to not feel the pain before the medication is dispensed. the medication is given to remove the pain. we have embargoes since dec 1963. it is an open wound. it will not heal till they are removed for at least 10 years or more and tcs begin to trust again.

Your an idiot for thinking he could play America.

He pretty much sided with Russia to appease the Communists and that posses the Americans off, but playing America is a different matter. America is the one that does the playing.

The biggest proportion of his voters were actually AKEL or Communist supporters.

Without them, he was nothing.

Makarios himself was never actually anti American or Communist. In fact, he was bum chums with the Kennedy. He had Kennedy's ear and there was a respect between them from their uni days.
