"Turkish government bans May Day celebrations in historic Taksim square"

And this is the nation that insists on being our.....guarantor!!!

"The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the government of Turkey violated Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, on the right to freedom of association, when it used repressive measures against members of DISK and KESK to prevent the 2008 May Day rally in Taksim Square."

In Beşiktaş, the police say that the provincial governor has proposed that a reasonable number march to Taksim. The delegation is refusing to concede. Negotiations are being conducted with the provincial governor.

The second round of negotiations with the police in Beşiktaş has ended. Now the leaders of a number of organisations will negotiate with the provincial governor. Police tell the May 1st committee that they have pushed their patience to the limit.

A plain-clothes police officer, arresting one of the thirty or so people who briefly made it into Taksim square, captured on camera banging the young man's head against the tram rails.
