It's more like repression. It's easy for the zealots to brainwash women and force them to wear such things under threat of heinous sharia punishment.

listen stupid for a while it was illegal to wear headscarfs in terggy, these people got round that by wearing a wig over the headscarf. i never claimed what they do is good. but it is their tradition and they choose it and you have no right to take the piss out of them. it is a crime do discriminate. if you said at your workplace what you say here or post a picture at your workplace taken the piss you will lose your job. unless of course you are a pots and pans merchant in your job then it is a punishment enough and you deserve it.

I offer my sincere apologies for insulting your sensitivities, in the past I also made derogatory remarks directed at other traditional practices such as honour killings, stoning to death, cutting off hands and of course beheadings.

I was entirely out of order not realizing that such traditional practices are sacred. My apologies !

In other words, the author was perceptive and knowledgeable enough to realise that these women were not Turkish, but visitors from a conservative Muslim country (although I think it is possible that they are from a very conservative part of central Anatalolia).

I my opinion, women should be free to dress in any socially acceptable way they please. If they, of their own free will, wish to engage in an extreme form of Islamic veiling, this is their prerogative.

is simply archive material from the Times newspaper purporting to show a woman wearing the burka, which strictly speaking she isn't because the burka is a specific type of garment worn by women from certain ethnic groups in Afghanistan and is different from the garment which this woman is wearing, which is an abaya (please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abaya). Where is your evidence that this woman is Turkish?

On closer examination, that is a burka because it is one piece. The burka is not worn in Turkey, although the Arab-style abaya may be worn by some ultra-orthodox Turkish Muslim women. That to me indicates that the probability of the woman in the picture being Turkish is virtually nil.
