Perhaps you're right about the Port.

but with regard to the Airport, someone will have to be in charge and responsible for all the regulatory requirements as well as Air Traffic Control, security, and Aerodrome Standards as well as all the Safety Management Systems, Emergency Response Plans, Auditing and Compliance, and even incident and crash investigations.

It can only be granted to a State - and what I mean about a State is a Country not some State within a Federation. ICAO is basically an arm of the United Nations and as such only countries can be signatories not States (i.e California can't be a signatory, only the USA is).

Therefore, the Airport can only achieve legitimacy as part of a comprehensive settlement.

I am not sure about that. Klerides has proposed in the past to re-operate Nicosia's International airport, where there would be two gates one leading to the occupied and another to us. It seems to me Air laws is one thing ground laws is another.

Someone will need to be responsible for security at both sides of the divide, particularly in this day and age due to terrorism.

Politicians can say what they like. It's only when you get the experts in and the right consultants, when things get very difficult.

Anyway, it's not a big deal. If there is a comprehensive settlement, they can have their own Airport. But everyone needs to understand that in Federations, Airport Land is Federal Land, comes under Federal Jurisdiction (RoC), FIR and ATC is under Federal jurisdiction and only Federal Police have jurisdiction in the terminal spaces and on Airside, and are under the auspices of the Federal Regulator which in the RoC's case will be the Civil Aviation Department.

The problem though with having 3 international airports is that the taxpayer will need to fund 3 International Airports and that is hugely expensive on a small country like Cyprus - so pooooor Cyprus Taxpayer because Airports are money pits. Zillions of bucks to maintain the facilities, customs, Fed Police, security and compliance.

So it would be very beneficial on everyone to consolidate things like Airports otherwise the tax payer of Cyprus will bleed dry or the State will go bust!

If the GCs and TCs can't work together on this, then you got to ask serious questions.

Why don't we just legalise, murder and rape to keep them happy.

Ercan is illegal, the settlers are illegal, casinos are illegal (under RoC) law, therefore should be removed in any settlement.

But we all know there won't be such a thing so I guess we have nothing to worry about huh???? Unless of course the mushrooms on this side mess things up.

Do you consider Anastasiades a "mushroom"? May I remind you he was the only supporter of the Anan Plan :!: If I were you I would start thinking about the really strong possibility that the Cyprob would be solved very soon. That would keep you so busy that you would have no time for whores anymore

Seems to me you are the one busy with the whores (when was the last time you visited, maybe you need a revisit), since you whore yourself to the Turks.

IF a solution is found, I will admit I was wrong, but I won't hold mybreath.

The mushrooms I was referring to was people like you, malaka.

The topic was dead, we all know that, but the simple minded like to believe is fairy stories so I thought I would inject something more interesting.

The cost of the Federal system will surprise us all. It is not just double the usual government cost, but a lot more. And let us not forget our propensity fo seek out a nice cushy civil service "position", an affliction common to both communities. Then there will be the added cost to business of complying with local, regional, federal and EU regulations. Now add the judicial layers and levels of appeal and you get the picture.

The one asset the RoC has, and it is internationally acknowledged and lauded, is its efficient civil service. We are likely to lose that.

My original question has been answered. Akinci IS now president of the TRNC or whatever anyone likes to call the geographic area in the North.
There are several essential differences between Akinci and other TRNC presidents:

1. He got elected with the support of a very small political party. He has no one to answer to other than the people
2. He has a sound, proven past record of good co-operation with the south as Nicosia Mayor. This creates expectations for the G/Cs but also sets standards HE HIMSELF has to live upto
3. He stayed away from local T/C politics for a very long time, thus uncorrupted and free from the usual Cypriot shortcomings that politicians suffer from, such as favouratism.
4. He rose to power without the backing of Turkey
5. He has a moustache.

Of course the TRNC is completely dependent on Turkey financially. An oversized public sector is in effect a huge votes pool that cannot risk staying unpaid. There are other issues ofcourse but money is the biggest. He will not have an easy job. Let us support him. Our main support will be to understand the difficulties he has to face.
