What was life like in the TC area from say '74 until now? In the West in general we've always heard stories of how the Turkish Security Services were everywhere, not just in Cyprus but in mainland Turkey itself.
How much freedom of speech did (or do) you have?
How much power did (or does) Denktash have?
Was it "safe to openly disagree with him, or his cronies?
What about travel? Could you travel anywhere or did you have to say exactly where you were going?
Did people "disappear"?
For how long do you have to do military service?
How have things changed since 2003?
What was life like in the TC area from say '74 until now?
HARDER THAN IN THE SOUTH. ISOLATION, ISOLATION, ISOLATION! BUT AT LEAST NO MORE KILLINGS, ETHNIC CLEANSING, MISSING PEOPLE - YEP THAT HAPPENED TO THOUSANDS OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS TOO, AND NOT FROM 1974, BUT SINCE THE 1950s!

I'M SURE THE SECURITY SERVICES PRESENT WERE PROPORTIONATELY NO MORE OR LESS THAN ANYWHERE ELSE.
How much freedom of speech did (or do) you have?
COMPLETE FREEDOM. HOW ELSE WOULD WE HAVE VIEWS AS DIVERSE AS DENTASH's AND AKINCI's? I DON'T THINK THERE IS AS MUCH FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN DA SOUTH SIDE? I HEAR A GREEK CYPRIOT FILM DIRECTOR TONY AGOSTINIDES HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO SHOW HIS DOCUMENTARY, VOICE OF BLOOD (ON GREEK CYPRIOT ATTROCITIES - MASS GRAVES) ON SOUTH? AND HE BEEN GETTING ALOT OF THREATS. WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?
How much power did (or does) Denktash have?
HE WAS THE PRESIDENT OF NORTH CYPRUS, SO HE HAD AS MUCH POWER AS HIS AUTHORITY GAVE HIM. AT HIS PEAK, HE DREW (DESERVEDLY IN MY HUMBLE OPINION) A LOT OF RESPECT. BUT HE ALSO MADE MISTAKES. HE IS NOW OUT OF THE POLITICAL LIMELIGHT AND HAS NO MORE POWER THAN ORDINARY CITIZEN, BUT STILL COMMANDS ALOT OF RESPECT, ALTHOUGH INFLUENCE IS NOW VERY LIMITED.
Was it "safe to openly disagree with him, or his cronies?
YES. WE GOT TALAT AND SOYER IN POWER AND THEY WELL DISAGREE WITH FORMER PRESIDENT DENKTAS' VIEWS.
What about travel? Could you travel anywhere or did you have to say exactly where you were going?
YES, APART FROM ON MILITARY ZONES, BUT THAT'S THE SAME ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. AND NO, WE DIDN'T NEED TO TELL ANYONE WHERE WE WERE GOING.
Did people "disappear"?
USUALLY FROM GREEK CYPRIOT ATTACKS, WHICH STOPPED WITH TURKISH INTERVENTION IN 1974.
For how long do you have to do military service?
NOT SURE. I IZ A GAL!
How have things changed since 2003?[/quote]
LOTS! PEOPLE HAVE CHECKED THE OTHER SIDE (NOT ALL GOOD THERE), MADE THEIR PEACE AND MOVED ON - USUALLY UP! AND THEIR GOOD WILL TOWARDS DA SOUTH SIDE AIN'T GONNA LAST FOREVER - YOU KEEP SLAPPING THAT HAND OF PEACE AWAY COS YOU WANNA HOLD OUT FOR DA GRANDDADDY PRIZE AND ONE DAY, YOU GONNA FIND THAT HAND GONE.
TURKISH CYPRIOTS ARE MORE CONFIDENCE ABOUT THE FUTURE AND WITH GOOD REASON. IT'S ALL ABOUT GOOD KARMA.
41 YEARS OF EMBARGOES (PRE-DATES '74) - GOT TO END SOME TIME.
PEACE OUT
