What was life like in the TC area from say '74 until now? In the West in general we've always heard stories of how the Turkish Security Services were everywhere, not just in Cyprus but in mainland Turkey itself.

How much freedom of speech did (or do) you have?
How much power did (or does) Denktash have?
Was it "safe to openly disagree with him, or his cronies?
What about travel? Could you travel anywhere or did you have to say exactly where you were going?
Did people "disappear"?
For how long do you have to do military service?
How have things changed since 2003?

HE WAS THE PRESIDENT OF NORTH CYPRUS, SO HE HAD AS MUCH POWER AS HIS AUTHORITY GAVE HIM. AT HIS PEAK, HE DREW (DESERVEDLY IN MY HUMBLE OPINION) A LOT OF RESPECT. BUT HE ALSO MADE MISTAKES. HE IS NOW OUT OF THE POLITICAL LIMELIGHT AND HAS NO MORE POWER THAN ORDINARY CITIZEN, BUT STILL COMMANDS ALOT OF RESPECT, ALTHOUGH INFLUENCE IS NOW VERY LIMITED.

YES. WE GOT TALAT AND SOYER IN POWER AND THEY WELL DISAGREE WITH FORMER PRESIDENT DENKTAS' VIEWS.

YES, APART FROM ON MILITARY ZONES, BUT THAT'S THE SAME ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. AND NO, WE DIDN'T NEED TO TELL ANYONE WHERE WE WERE GOING.

Did people "disappear"?
USUALLY FROM GREEK CYPRIOT ATTACKS, WHICH STOPPED WITH TURKISH INTERVENTION IN 1974.

Many Turkish Cypriots died, and far more Greek Cypriots. If you think that the ethnic cleansing you performed was the solution, then I guess you would accept as a solution to send all TCs to Turkey? There will not be any more killings in this way either.

He was allowed to make the film, didn't he? In turkey or the "TRNC" nobody has made a film about the far worst crimes against GCs. As a matter of fact there is a law in Turkey that will allow them to put in jail anybody that even tries to do such thing. The jails of Turkey are full with such people.

ISOLATION is the fault of Turkey for dividing the two peoples and pushing TC into an illegal state. You think after stealing the RoC's ports, the Cypriot government is going to let the Turks use them!? Your dumb.

There were intercommunal fights between GC and TC from about the early 60's to 74...which caused about the same amount of deaths. He's a joke who in his youth helped to orchastrate the ill-feelings between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities...by commiting such acts like blowing up Turkish Cypriot offices and blaming these acts on Greek Cypriots (to which he owned up to for the good of Turkey having an excuse to abuse its guarantor powers and occupy Cyprus). He only has respect from Turkish nationalists...the same people who advocate the internationally recognised genocide against the Armenians.

It's a shame that this got politicised (although I was probably naive to think it wouldn't), as I just wanted to know what life was like for the ordinary TC, I've got several TC friends and they've told me their stories, but I'd like to have heard a few more. Never Mind.
