I live near the Penfolds winery.
I go to their cellars regularly.
The price tags vary from $300 AUD right up to $10,000. It compares to anything the French can muster.
The grapes are grown in the Barrossa Valley. There are hundreds of other wineries there as well.
You would be familiar with Wolfblaes. They too have some varieties worth hundreds of dollars. The industry is huge.
There are many more small boutique wineries too. Too many which I have no clue about but apparently right up there with the best.
Many Australian wines have German names. Even the towns are German. The wineries are owned and passed on within Getman wine dynasties right from the initial periods of Australia's European settlement.
These families are extremely wealthy too. One winery is worth over a Billion dollars. I am not sure if that is Penfolds, Jacobs Creek or Wolfblaes. These are the well known ones.
Usually Heads of State are dined at Penfolds. It's a must visit.
Last year they closed the joint down for Obama and Hillary Clinton. I'm pretty sure they get to try the most expensive wine too at $2500 a glass all at tax payer's expense.
