Some simple differences, like the Ukraine not being part of the EU, there being no treaty of establishment, and above all there is no counter measure like the union of the free areas with Greece which is a Turkish nightmare. You ought to read statements made by Turkish leaders some time. They will enlighten you, people like Ecevit, Ozal, Demirel, even Erdo himself said it a couple of years back, double union will make Greece a Middle Eastern power and this scares them for some reason.

Even in an atmosphere where flying the Flag of Cyprus represents an offence worthy of arrest, it is not so clear whether the "tc" as you call them are "Turks".

Let me make it perfectly clear:

To the Turkish Cypriots, "Turkish" is their Cypriot "type". The Turkish Cypriots are Cypriots First, then their Turks (but even this is not the same as the Turks from Turkey - Turks from Turkey are "native Turks").
And who said that Flying the Cyprus flag was an offence that gets you arrested? A Turkish Cypriot created that flag and people have used that flag in protests. If there is a problem with waving the Cyprus flag, it is due to Occupation by Turkey & Nationalists, it's not due by any Turkish Cypriot desire.
