Anyone with an IQ less than 80 has to pay an annual levy! :P

Such a law wouldn’t be in your best interests!

I am falling in love with Tsibras! :D

I reckon a 500 annual levy per person is fair! Let's see you tick the orthodox box at the next census then!

I disagree with anything like an "Orthodox Tax".

What should be done in both Greece and Cyprus is that all the businesses and properties of the Church should be taxed like the rest of us, and secondly each religious group should be self-funded. If the Church can't pay the taxes then some of its property should be taken and shared among the poor people.

I think it's a brill idea.

If they want to subsidize the Church then the tax must be collected from those that need its services.

You could imagine the outcry if they subsidized religions in Australia or UK. It's pretty ridiculous how the state is burdened with this when they should be concentrating or social services such as Health, Education, Law and Order, infrastructure, Defence, etc etc

this is very interesting. the day this happens i shall return.

GREECE'S new prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, made history within hours of his victory by informing the Archbishop of Athens, very politely, that clerical services would not be required for his swearing-in ceremony. An avowed atheist who has nonetheless made a point of dealing courteously with senior clergy, Mr Tsipras lost no time in making known that his oath of office would be a secular procedure. It was also explained that when the whole cabinet was sworn in, a more junior cleric (but not the archbishop) would be invited to assist those who wished to take a religious oath.

"AN avowed atheist" who visited Mount Athos, the Virgin Mary church in Tinos, and a bunch of other churches, crossing himself and kissing icons. No wonder the most used word these days in Greece is COLOTOUMBA, a somersault.

Like all other politicians he is willing to eat shit to get votes, atheist or not.

I am surprised at how naive some forum members can be. Taxing the church will simply give the opposition a cause, a popular one. Tsipras will talk it up and finally "rationalise" that as the Church spends most of its income on welfare programs for the poor they should be exempt etc etc and one more COLOTOUMBA will be chalked up.

Today's news is a long series of COLOTOUMBAS, gone are the threats to tear up the Troika memos, the unilaterla stoppage of debt repayments, the reversal of privatisations. Nuances are starting to creep in the rhetoric, so they now will reverse the privatization of those airports that do not make enough revenue for the state, so as to find in a few weeks that all privatised airports make more for the state now than when they were publicly owned, etc .

Forty years of living in Greece have taught me that there is no more conservative being on earth than a Greek leftist. The style is new, but the game's the same, as the song says.
