Because if a group of people is shown to be tiny (0.15% as the fake results show the number of the "Atheists/No-religion" group) then these people can be ignored much easier. Example: Mandatory religion courses in schools, which I believe should be optional, but it is much harder to make that argument if fake census data shows that practically everybody who attends our public schools is Orthodox.

But the fact you as an "atheist" were classified as religious or not has nothing to do with how many proffered an actual choice.

It is not just me, but many other people I know, who were either not even asked what their religion was, or were not given the option to record the fact that they were not religious.

The issue is not a "big fat nothing", but a very important one as it is one of the elements which prevents progress in our country (as I already explained).

That is another thing I don't understand: "pray for forgiveness"

If you have wronged somebody you should ask that person to forgive you, not pray for it.

If you killed an innocent person, you can't ask him for forgiveness, and that is an example of a crime that can't be forgiven.

If you haven't wronged anybody then there is nothing to be forgiven about.

"Praying for forgiveness" is a cheap and easy way to get rid of guilt which can only encourage you to repeat the wrongful actions.

According to the bible, one cannot start asking God for forgiveness for a specific sin out of the blue without first repenting their ways and turning their life around 180 degrees.

Upon doing that it is said that a spiritual communication is established between the person genuinely repenting and God who then somehow reminds the person of each of the bad deeds he had committed so as to correct each in turn.

This may involve the person going back to some shop where they had stolen a bar of chocolate when they were say 15 and just paying for it if the shop is still there, as an example, etc.

That’s why I said that “forgiveness is only granted when genuine remorse exists”.

Get Real, the one who should forgive you is the one to whom you caused harm. Lets say you wronged somebody and then you followed your own beliefs to a stage that you believe that your God forgave you. But that somebody that you wronged did not forgive you. Are you forgiven? I'd say No. You essentially just forgave yourself though your own God to make yourself feel better and get rid of the guild, but since the person you harmed has not forgiven you then you are not actually forgiven.
