Dogs in cyprus - safe? Poisonings?

Postby Lalee » Sat Jan 17, 2015 9:18 am

Me again, another question :) I keep seeing things about dog poisonings in Cyprus, I have two little doggies who (obviously) would move to cyprus with us. Is it safe? I mean, where is this poison, are your dogs safe on walks, in your garden etc?

Freaking out a bit!

Your dogs would be safe in your garden or if you are walking and picking up after them. The problem starts when people allow their dogs to run freely on other peoples land who may have laid down poison for rodents and such.

Most areas are pretty safe, and you'll get to know them.

My daughter lives in Limassol and has 2 dogs, the children adore them and take them for walks across the road to a little park.

Some Cypriots, mostly the older ones, consider them a nuisance, but overall the dogs are perfectly safe and accepted by most as household pets. There has been a noticeable increase of pets over the last few years, attitudes towards them have moved favourably.

You have no fear taking your dogs to Cyprus especially in towns.

May I also add that my daughter is half English who prior to coming over to Cyprus spoke no Greek, she now does fluently and has blended in with the Cypriot culture. My late English wife absolutely loved Cyprus and spent much time on her own, stretching more than 40 years, she looked very English, spoke no Greek and never encountered any animosity towards her, she loved the island so much she made it her resting place on passing away.

You have no fears in Cyprus either for your self or family including your dogs. The Cypriot people are friendly, civil and like me, exceedingly caring towards animals and children.

If you ensure that your dog doesn’t become a nuisance to others then it should be alright, because Cypriots do have a tendency to take care of business when annoyed.

Take my case as an example; a house across mine foolishly decided to start feeding feral cats by leaving food outside in their garden.

This has resulted in about 4-5 feral cats getting very brazen and cavalier so I now often find them “congregating” in my beautiful garden and causing annoying problems.

Prior to that the odd feral cat would visit once a month which I can tolerate but I certainly don’t want 5 cats; “belonging” to someone else, here every day!

My only choice now is to ask them to stop feeding them or I’ll have no choice but to poison them.

Just ignore the comments above made by a Christian / Islamist who would not hesitate to poison dogs and may I add people too. He is a psychopath so take him with a pinch of....poison

He believes that God created all living things, I don't, but he would easily kill cats because they disturb his beautiful garden

I love cats, they too have a right to share our planet and nourish our gardens

Again from my own experience I have had nothing but happy memories with my dog (bless her little heavenly paws) in Cyprus.

Before I knew quite how bad these "stories" of poisonings were, I used to let my dog run around the fields (my dads) but they spread across on to others, and she wandered a bit. She never came to any harm and I must say, I never noticed any signs that anyone was laying out rat poison (apart from myself, one mad rat-infested summer, when the cat population in the village had noticeably declined and one got in the house).

However, I did hear of a few cases were dogs had died from snake bites. :(

Anyway, she even run around on the beach and swam in the sea - and only once did a woman get out of the sea and looked disgusted that my dog was in the same 'water' as her. :P

But, I would say the worst hazard for dogs in Cyprus is being left in cars (even with the windows slightly open) as it gets killingly hot. No No No!

Those that resort to poisoning or killing dogs cats , or birds are but a tiny minority due to their indifference and somewhat contempt towards animals, we have just been given an example by a nasty who shall remain ....anonymous

I should have added, dogs are NOT allowed on the beach unless in designated areas, of which there are very, very few.

That's true - as it is in all European countries. It's even more sensitive an issue in Cyprus as turtles lay their eggs in quite a few areas of beach.

Cats lives are ruled by their stomachs (someone must have told them there's a large chicken living at your house).
