None of the candidates received enough votes to be elected as the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community at the first round therefore incumbent Dr. Derviş Eroglu and Mustafa Akıncı will compete for the leadership in a second round.
The second round elections will be held on 26 April 2015.
Distribution of votes at 661 ballot boxes which have been opened (out of 693)is as the following:
Mustafa Onurer (Cyprus Socialist Party): 0.39 percent
Dr. Sibel Siber (CTP-BG): 22.51 percent
Kudret Özersay (Independent): 21.23 percent
Dr. Derviş Eroglu (Independent): 28.38 percent
Mustafa Ulaş (Independent): 0.24 percent
Mustafa Akıncı (Independent): 26.76 percent
Arif Salih Kırdağ (Independent): 0.49 percent
The vote ran without hiccups, according the authorities.
UN negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem are now expected to resume after the second round.
Peace talks were suspended in October last year as Turkish research vessel Barbaros violated Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone.
The ship left Cyprus and returned to Turkey earlier this month.
