My recent trip to Cyprus made me realise one thing: Duty shopping in Cyprus is crap.

From my limited understanding of the topic the Cyprus Airways- Sri Lanka adventure went pear shaped because the Sri Lankans prefered to go bargain hunting in duty free havens like Dubai and Bahrain.

Maybe the Cypriot government has to nationalise its duty free shops and heavily subsidise Duty Free Shops. Provide them with free rent or free labour who knows but the flow on effect of a reputation for discount Duty free shopping would attract Shoppers and may even make Cyprus an industry hub.

Do we even get Sri Lankan tourists? Does such thing exist? Some time ago in Greece they had this 2 word joke: Albanian Tourist OK, this is a JOKE, don't tell me I am racist and such now!!!

Cyprus AIrways was flying to Colombo last year but that died in the arse after the Sri lankan Guess Workers discovered they could get better Duty Free Deals from Bubai and Bahrain.

what do you mean by "guest workers" from Sri Lanka? Housemaids? They choose country based on duty free offers?

that is what I read.

Don't focus on Sri lankans...that is our big problem. Cypriots need to see the big picture. In Asia and other places many tourist choose travel destinations based on the quality of the local shopping including duty free shopping.

Cyprusairways obviously failed to make the link and thats Y it is going down the toilet.
