I have a question for Cyprus residents of Cypriot decent and I was wondering what are the general sentiments of Greeks for Cypriots because I feel confused. I mean, my (Cypriot) cousin's grandfather keeps a greek flag hanging from his window for the pst 50 years now, but when my Greek cousin was a fantaro in Cyprus people actually came up to him and spit on him when he was wearing his uniform.

Any thoughts?

When did this happen, immediately after the greek officer directed coup in 1974? There was resentment for greek fantari in Greece itself during the junta years.

You know, it's always slightly confused me too, despite explanations from my Dad. I think that the flag more represents that they are Greek Cypriots rather than showing any alegience to Greece. I think Greeks understand that by demanding Enosis, they were playing into Turkey's hands, and I don't know anyone who supports Enosis now. Which is a good thing.

Then again, after Greece won Euro 2004, someone in Lefkosia had a huge Greek flag down his whole flat building, so Greek Cypriots are certainly proud of Greece... but the relationship between the Cyprus Greek and the Greek seems to be that of cousin, instead of brother, if you see what I mean. Of course, I'm only half Cypriot, but these are my understandings.

its the age old problem for all cypriots we want to differentiate ourselves from the mainland people as after hundreds of years and many rulers we are a different people, society and not like the mainland people our language even though similar also very different.
