Piratis wrote:What our government should do is to encourage all refugees to take their belongings and return to their homes.

The Turkish army will not accept it, and incidents similar to the ones of 1996 will happen again (hopefully with no victims). This will remind the whole world that the Turkish army is violating the basic human rights of 1000s of people and will force the Turks to close the gates themselves.

What is our Cyprus problem: Our human right violations and the illegal occupation of part of our country.
What is the Cyprus problem for the TCs: The isolation and the non recognition.

The opening of the gates serves the TCs to partly solve their problem while it doesn't help us at all (shortage of tourist destinations was never our problem). They should realize they can not solve their problem without solving ours, and there are ways to make them understand this.

Looks like the "refugees" will need some convincing Piratis. And you’re right that once our problem is solved then you can get on with making your side of the island as successful as ours will be soon. Perhaps when the shoe is on the other foot the RoC government will be more amenable.
Real Estate in North Cyprus cont..

Real estate in North Cyprus has been beginning to boom since 2004 when the citizens of the TRNC voted yes to the Annan Plan and yes to the peaceful reunification of Cyprus and were immediately rewarded with EU aid and an increase in foreign direct investment.
Since 2004 property investment into Northern Cyprus has been freer flowing and consistent, and the amount of money spent by the government on infrastructure and amenity improvement and development has been impressive. All indicators point to a long term upward trend in real estate prices in North Cyprus.
In terms of the real estate investment opportunities currently available in North Cyprus they range in size and type from an off plan residential apartment for sale from GBP 50,000 to a 400 berth marina requiring investment of in excess of GBP 90 million. The majority of investors are seeking residential properties to purchase off plan for both capital appreciation and rental yield.
The demand for property to let is strongest in the tourism sector and now that various UK based tour operators such as Going Places have agreed to showcase TRNC brochures and the city of London is advertising North Cyprus on buses and in underground stations the profile of this stunning Mediterranean destination is becoming more widely known. This will push up tourism numbers which have already been creeping up annually for the past five years and should equate to an intensification of demand for short term villa and apartment rental from which a real estate investor could profit.
Northern Cyprus also has five major universities which are receiving investment from America and the Middle East and all of which have expanded their student numbers in 2005. Students require accommodation and the amount of campus based student accommodation is restricted - this presents both the residential and commercial real estate investor with opportunity and potential.
Other commercial ventures requiring investment include the aforementioned 400 berth marina which also has planning permission to incorporate a 5 star hotel and casino as well as waterfront villas and apartments within the entire development in Esentepe east of Northern Cyprus’s main resort town of Kyrenia (Girne). There are also smaller ventures requiring investment in North Cyprus such as the Ottoman Palace hotel in Girne.
Real estate investors have such choice and opportunity for growth and strong yield in North Cyprus it is no wonder that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is receiving such intense worldwide media interest and that the numbers of those traveling to the country to explore investment opportunities is at an all time high

TheCabbie, the way you fomulated your question and how you later responded made it sound more like a clear answer of : yes lets close the border. if it was indeed a question then why dont you tell us your opinion ?

Believe it or not, I'm not sure, I see boths sides of the argument, I like going to the North, both socially and in work, I've made some good friends up there...

But it's a weird situation, apart from the one mentioned (freedom of movement to all Cypriots) I can't see having it open is getting us in the South anywhere.
Another question; do the TCs in the north see themselves as being oart of the RoC, I know several that while they want the Turks to leave, don't want to be fully unified with the GCs...

:? :? :? Confused? I am :?

My friend 'the cabbie' WHY DO YOU EVEN TRY TO TALK SOME SENSE INTO PEOPLE LIKE THIS LOT. Its just not worth it. Its impossible for them to see that we do whatever the Turkish army wants. They can not see that we are treaded like shit. They talk about people being farmers 30 years ago and now having some money and think too proud for them selfs,,,,but they dont tell you that the real reason they want the""""""border"""" open is to have everything easy in their lifes ...like the "now having money, farmer use to be people" But anyway i am fed up trying to talk to "single brain-cell organisms" The best think to do now ,which we wont (you need balls to do a think like this), is to close all the opennings, the TCs will be cut off instanly, we will tell them that if the Turkish forces and all the imigrands do not live the island we will not let them come over and work,( bear in mind that now they are used to money) and they will react against their """""""goverment""""" as they are to blame and we might get something out of it.
Have a good day

hi OB1.
i dont know if u realised but i am a gc. therefore i cannot understand your comment of me "wanting the border opened bc i want everything easy in my life"!!! could you elaborate on that a bit?

what makes you so sure that the response of the tcs will be to put pressure on their goverment?
the only way they would do that , would be if they trusted our goverment that it wants reunification...which at this point in time, seems more like a science fiction scenario.
moreover, dont overestimate the "tc dependance on our money". the north is improving and for a big part we have nothing to do with it.
not to mention, that being in a country were we have seen the effects of nationalism, the possible effect of trying to punish the tcs (and not the settlers and the army) is to push them towards nationalism.

yet OB1, you left the most important question unanswered. How are you going to explain to the international community that we represent all cypriots?
have a nice day too

as i already said ....anyway i know you're a gc, (by the way GC and TC was invented by the brits (in 1966-i think) because surved their targets) when i said 'they' i was refering to people like you, that they refuse to "think". Like some party supporters which vote because their party told them to and not because they had a look at what they vote for. For many people in Cyprus is unthinkable to vote for a different person or party every time. My friend you have to deside who you are (not in an ethnic way-which is what you instanly thought) and then feel a bit proud

OB1,
i never voted for any party if that what is your concern. you that you can "think" could you propose one for me?

if you dont like the term gc, then i ll just use cypriot. hope you are not offended by the term.

i dont see how deciding who i am, and if i feel proud about has anything to do with the topic.

dont make it tiring OB1 and answer the question:

How are we going to convince the international community that the RoC represents all cypriots if we close the borders?

do you consider your self having the same power, geostetegik importance, and allies as turkey? turkey can afford not bothering to convince anybody (while they are trying hard to do that, and are really god as well), while we dont. we follow the path of convincing because thats the only one we have, in order to reunify our country. if you know any other way let us know.

i dont know if you noticed but our whole strategy the last 30 years is based on the fact that we are the legal and only goverment on the island. as a concequence we cannot prevent the free movement of cypriots in cyprus, because that makes us just the goverment to the gc and the gcs only.
moreover , we are also supposed to be "europeans". try to explain to the ECHR that you prevent free movement in your country on the grounds of.... the turks never had to convincing anybody!!!

as soon as you close the borders, you have opened the road to the recognision of the north.
thats also a solution to the cyprus problem. if thats what we want...

cypezokyli, what do you think about what I proposed? That way we will not be the ones preventing anything and therefore we will not have the problems that you mention.

Personally I was in favor of the gate openings until recently. I was hoping that this will help the TCs to realize that we are not the monsters they were taught and that this will make the understand that there can be no excuse for violating our human rights. Did this happen? Unfortunately not. The reason is that "lack of trust" was by itself an excuse.
The real reason that TCs want to be separated is because they believe this would make them gain on our loss. We have to show them that the only way they can gain is if they stop the illegalities and respect our human rights.
