There are two stories about the Cyprus division, the nationalist story and the Cold War story. With the Cold War over, everyone on this forum seems to want to talk about the nationalist story. However, the Cold War has not finished it has evolved. Now we have global warming and financial crisis. Marx remains relevant, but as one thinker in the plethora of progressive solutions, the dialectic between those twin progressive movements of the nineteenth century, Communism and New Age spirituality, is beginning to come together in synthesis, yet no one on this forum is representing it, except possibly RW, and he is aligned further to the spiritual side than the material. And why not? Material conditions are good in Cyprus if we measure them on quantity. But if we measure them on environmental and social impact there is a lot to be desired. The age of 1000 year old lifespans is rapidly approaching. Quality of life must become a cause that we are willing to engage with. And for that to happen, capitalism must be superseded. Muslims are looking back to the golden age of Sharia economics. But the mechanics that were suitable for the past are not the same as the mechanics that are suitable for the present. We have yet to find the economic structures that will replace capitalism. They will surely involve the internet and the concept of the gift economy. Politically we can learn from the Irish where independent TDs are rapidly replacing the established parties with their cronyism. All of this should be juxtaposed against AKEL. The Cold War may be over, yet the party remains as relevant today as it ever was.
