Cyprus planning to join Schengen according to Kasoulides

As the title says, Cyprus planning to enter Schengen.....in 2020 :) Siga-Siga....they like to plan ahead

In my opinion, the absolute main concern of Cyprus and Cypriots is that Cyprus enters Schengen, Russians will not be able to come here anymore like in their own back yard which is obviously a scare, both because of the loss of tourists as well as loss of "economic" activity. 8)

At this point I don't think we have anything to gain from Schengen. It seems that we are obligated to join eventually but obviously there is no hurry.

I agree but the point of the thread was more with regards to Kasoulides declaration than the adherence itself to Schengen. IMO though, Cyprus has little to lose by joining Schengen, it's other countries who have suffered a lot, in terms of swarm of illegal immigrants making their way thru Eastern/Southern Europe and heading straight for the "cherry tree" of W. Europe

Cyprus being an island quite isolated the chances are it wouldn't be used as much as a access "ramp" as are the Italian islands, also Malta, Southern France&Spain etc. But who knows, if CY would be in Schengen, it's quite possible we would have a whole different perspective pertaining illegal immigrants (as in much worse :? )

Just curious (and asking because I have absolutely no knowledge of this matter):
Looking at Google Earth it looks like the border is crisscrossed with dirt roads at some places - here as an example:
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.08,32.84&spn=0.01,0.01&t=h&q=35.08,32.84
How difficult is it to cross - without being checked - if you really want to?

We have plenty of threads that outline the pros and cons of Schengen which you can search for. We’re not going through all that again!

Also the articles you quote here are from last year and one year in politics is a long time. If you're gonna start a thread on something at least have up to date information.
