U-2 spy plane in Cyprus

Postby excommo » Tue Sep 30, 2014 4:52 am

:o The following is from noted UK author Chis Pocock's 'hot off the press' new book "Dragon Lady Today". It is his 4th book on the subject in the last 30 years. Chris usually attends all of the various U-2 association's  events in Calif and Nevada. He is considered the leading authority on the U-2 by both those who have been associated with the U-2 over the years and the U.S. Government.

"....1st Expeditionary Recon Sq, which keeps three jets on Cyprus at RAF Akrotiri. In August 1974, The USAF took over the CIA's last U-2 operation here. This had been set up four months earlier in April 1974, to monitor the uneasy truce between Israel and its Arab neighbours following the 1973 war. The Dragon Lady neighbour had been in residence on "Fantasy Island" ever since in an operation that is codenamed Olive Harvest. The 1st ERS flies a variety of missions around the troubled region. The squadron leads a twilight existence, it presence not being officially acknowledged by the British hosts. The UK has sovereign rights over
Akrotiri airbase, and is not formally obliged to tell the Cypriot government what goes on there. In April 2014, Olive Harvest celebrated the 40th anniversay on "Fantasy Island" with the slogan "Still Not Here After 40 years".

There were dozens of photos published in the early 80s of the planes taking off from Akrotiri. Anyone drinking coffee across Limassol bay can see the air traffic to and from the base. Not exactly a scoop by the writer.

I do not think Pocock thought he had a scoop. Anyone in the area could see and probably knew about the planes. It just was, and is. something that is not willingly made public.

"Liberated"? They are not occupied - they belong to the UK.
