BOMB SQUAD OFFICERS had to conduct an emergency evacuation earlier today after dangerous ammunition was found burning at a rubbish collection dump in the eastern village of Xylotympou.

According to reports, an anti-tank rocket, anti personnel mines and even anti-aircraft ammunition was discovered after garbage at the collection point caught fire.

It remains unclear if the ammunition comes from the Cyprus National Guard or British bases. Xylotympu is part of the territory of the Eastern Sovereign Base area, which houses the Dhekelia Garrison.

Fire-fighters that were called to tackle the blaze were unaware of the ammunition until a series of small explosions.

Luckily nobody was hurt in the incident. The Ministry of Defence are expected to make a statement later tonight.

The collection point is used to dump discarded household appliances, furniture and bulky garbage.
