I was wondering if anyone here is old enough to remember the day in Aug. 1956 when the Brits called a full alert on the island?
Radar saw a blip moving about 400MPH, at 60,000 feet. As no known plane could fly that high it had to be a UFO and the balloon went up. After 1960 when Powers was shot down over USSR in his U-2 spy plane, it came out that a U-2 was sent from Incirlik AFB near Adana to see what all the Brits were doing on the island concerning the Suez Crisis at the time. Of course come end of Oct. Brits, French and Israelis all attacked Egypt. I was on the last commercial flight to the island at 1730 Oct 30 coming back to roost after three months in Baghdad. At 1800 the island was shut down for about two weeks. My residential hotel was full of RAF crews for the Canberras that had just flown into RAF Nicosia. Could not get to the bar to get some brandy sours, dining room packed, and exhausted from the all day traveling and went to bed with no dinner. Got up in the morning expecting a mob scene at breakfast and no one in the room. They all got up very early to go bomb Egypt.
As if the troubles were not enough to deal with on the island, now a war. RAF drove off two attempts by Syria to attack the island during the next few days.
