Turkey is planning to build a pipeline beneath the Mediterranean in its latest attempt to take much-needed fresh water to Turkish-controlled northern Cyprus.
It is hoped that the 100-kilometre (60-mile) pipeline will be finished by 2004.
The project, which has been under discussion for some time, will pump water for drinking and irrigation from the southern coast of Turkey.
A previous scheme to float drinking water across the Mediterranean in specially designed balloons had to be abandoned after the containers kept bursting.
