Old fool, while you were busy in London living the good life, I spent July/Aug of 1974, as a 9 year old digging tunnels with spades and shovels with 20 odd relatives so we could “hide” from Turkish bombings. I was hauling branches, old doors, pieces of corrugated iron and anything we could find to throw over the makeshift tunnels to make pitiful “roofs” for cover… as if they would help had a bomb fallen anywhere near us!

I was running in the heat to fetch water to put out fires spreading from napalm that had ignited crops and buildings. I was traversing fields from tree to tree and from dried river bed to some other “protection” to avoid overhead Turkish aircraft looking for targets.

Within a fortnight we had next to nothing to eat, next to nothing to drink and waves of refuges and wounded were arriving via tractors and old cars at our homes from Ashia, Vatili, Lysi, Kontea… we had nothing to give them but our floors and maybe a sheet or rag for a bed.

There were like 100 complete strangers sleeping all over our home in all rooms… the men mostly glued to an old B&W TV trying to catch the latest news. The women crying holding toddlers who hadn’t eaten or drunk water in days… yet the announcement was that we all had to move southwards… for some it was the 3rd or 4rth time… for more villages had fallen to the invader.

I intentionally avoid details I have difficulty writing about.
