Car Navigation (sat-nav GPS)

Postby Sotos » Sat Jul 19, 2014 2:57 am

I am planing to buy a new car soon and it seems that Sat-nav is still not available for Cyprus on new cars! I am talking about the integrated sat-nav... not an after-market thing. This is an issue due to the occupation I believe... but now that new cars come with nice screens built-in it is kinda pissing off not to have sat-nav available at least as an option! Anybody knows of any car brands that include sat-nav for Cyprus? OR any car brands whose nav system can be easily "hacked" to include Cyprus maps in it? What about used cars imported from UK ... maybe some of those can have sat-nav built in and available Cyprus maps? :?

I think Ford might do so. Only trouble is who do you buy a new Ford from in a Cyprus? The main dealer is the subject of fraud and corruption enquiry by the police arising out of allegations the they were importing and selling second hand cars as new, with the assistance of a public official in amending the official paperwork.

Why do you think that Ford might do so?

Because sat nav with Cyprus maps was an a possible upgrade I was offered at the showroom in Limassol recently.

About a year a go I thing Renault might also have been offering a Cyprus mapped sat nav.

Got a car without....correction.. Two cars without , in the end.

Everyone who owned a factory unit replaced it with a Tom Tom!

You should research more before wasting your money on factory navs.

No way!

People who go aftermarket are usually those that can't afford factory options.

Seems like Renault is still offering it... at least on one model. Any others?

Are you talking about Cyprus? It seems that not many would own a factory unit as very few companies are offering sat nav in Cyprus. Maybe you are thinking of the used Japanese cars which come with a non functioning sat nav? A Tom Tom or similar would be cheaper to buy and possibly cheaper to keep updated ... but it will not integrate as nicely with the car and most importantly it can look really ugly sticking another monitor on the dash! Many cars these days come with decent LCD displays and I think having no sat nav makes that display useless 99% of the time.

You got a Renault/Ford without? Was it just because of the price or something else?

That is "Designed for specific car models" ... and it seems that Tom Tom doesn't have Cyprus maps either.. but I guess you can add 3rd party maps on them because this is what Renault seems to be doing. I will check out the brands that are mentioned there! Do you have such thing yourself?

Factory screens have another problem.

The DVD/Blu Ray player goes blank when the vehicle is not in park. :x

I had to ground in the wire that attaches to the handbrake to get around that one.
