I would simply explain it as survival. Hamas agenda is the destruction of Israel, its in their manifesto.

Unfortunately, the only way Hamas can get any world attention on the Palestinian issues is when they force Israel to come and kill them. For Hamas, there’s no such thing as "Bad News". The worst it gets in Gaza in the hands of the Israelis, the more Hamas loves it. Who pays the price, the poor Palestinian people while Hamas takes a bow on the world stage for bringing death and destructions to their people at the hands of the Israelis? Israel defends its actions, though regrets the killing of innocent civilians, by pointing to the hundreds of rockets fired at it daily. Hamas defends its own actions by its convictions on the occupation and by doing so, the very people that it should protect, the Palestinians are suffering and become the victims of this latest confrontation.

Strange how two peoples who are ultra religious would show such utter disregard of human life.

The Israeli Religious zealots are very much on the fringes of their society.

As a matter of fact, they do not recognize the State of Israel as it was not divinely created by God himself which they believe is destined to occur when the Messiah comes to earth. Therefore, they believe that the State of Israel is not pure or is satanic even or is as a result of the workings of the Devil himself. Very similar doctrine to Hamas itself probably.

The vast majority of Israeli's are bordering on the very secular just like everywhere else in Europe, North America and Australia. They younger generations are more hip, yuppy, and a bit of a cafe latte cosmo set who are very uninterested in war and hunger for peace and a more pacifist Israel. Unfortunately, that is hardly possible as things stand. The ladies are more interested in the colour of their lipstick and what they are going to wear out to dinner and the guys are more interested in the ladies and sex as well as the NBA results!

The vast majority are all too willing to accept a pre 1967 defined Israel provided they will be left alone, but Hamas will not accept that either. Hamas wants all or nothing and to wipe Israel of the face of the map.

Oh and then there is the question of Jerusalem and by all accounts it's the Israelis that don't want to compromise there.

So it's a stalemate, and that is why we have war and violence.
