Here is balance zan...west trains the taliban....west fights the taliban...facts....not saying the west is squeaky clean...but you have to admit the islamists have a certain disdain for the west....not picking on moderates zan...we are not talking of people we refer to as muslims...

Presidential elections are coming in Turkey. The main two opposition parties have announced their candidate - and that is a huge surprise, because they have chosen somebody with strong islamist credentials. The AKP say they will announce their candidate on 1 July, but it is expected to be Erdoğan, which means he has to step down as party leader and prime-minister. Big changes are coming. In my opinion Turkey will survive, either under a putinesque Erdoğan dictatorship, or else, if he loses, this will usher in a spirit of reconciliation between secularists and Islamists.

If he wins, then the plan is to change the constitution and move on to a full presidential system which instals Erdoğan as dictator. The AKP's support for EU membership was a tactical ploy and will no longer be needed. So, he can pull Turkey out of the European Convention of Human Rights and will no longer be answerable to the European Court of Human Rights. Then no holds are barred as far as suppression of dissent goes, and opposition against him will stand as much chance as it did against the likes of Gaddafi or Saddam. The interesting thing is, though, if he loses, he will be finished. He hasn't announced his candidacy yet, so let's see.

It is unfortunately so. I can't believe that Ataturk's party is supporting Emeleddin İhsanoğlu, but there you have it.
