You see teams like Italy, Germany, Holland and a few others can relax for 80-90 minutes if they choose to do so and let you fantasize that you’ve got the draw in your pocket and then they get the nod from their manager and do 2-3 runs in the last 5 minutes or during extra time and score a couple of goals!

I recall some years ago when Italy and Cyprus were at 1-1 for a Euro qualifier and we hit crossbar twice at 89” and 90” and then at like 93” they dashed to the other side of the pitch and pulled a winner!

Yup… get used to that feeling Paphitis because Australia has a looooong way to go before they realize what football is all about.

I know what you are saying GR but if you sort of know you are not really in with a chance to win the cup then heart is all you can give it. If not, then don't go at all. That is the only way underdogs can sometimes pull it out of the hat. Makes for great viewing.

Do you really think Cyprus could pull off something like this?

Australia and Holland played 3 times before today. They never beat the Aussies EVER!

You really need to learn to differentiate friendlies from proper games. The one game that counted and you got battered

Australia beat Holland in the Confederations Cup. In fact, they have beaten a lot of teams in the Confederations Cup such as Brazil and Germany.

These are no friendlies!

Well, we are going a bit deep now after some fun but, I see a victory for the 80 year old who finishes a marathon 16 hours after the first runner does. It depends on what you want out of it and how realistic your goals are.

Australia's goals are to always win no matter who they play. For them, that is their reality. They play for the shirt.

I agree Paphitis but they cannot confuse that with their statistical reality. If they win by heart then so be it. If we extrapolate this to a war then a massacre would ensue. Heart must be preceded by brain.

Put it this way. Australian players have been playing in the top leagues of Europe for decades now and some for huge clubs like Liverpool, Everton, Rangers, Celtic, Chelsea, Leeds, PSV, Borrussia Dortmund, Anderlect, Besiktas, Galatasaray, AEK, Roma, Fiorentina, Porto, Benfica, AJAX, Zagreb - you name it.

So there is a wealth of Australian Talent playing professional football in Europe and there have been some big stars and household names over the years.

I mean how is Cyprus able to compete against that? It's a long road for any Cypriot player to make such teams.

So there is a huge difference between Cyprus and Australia.

A competition with Tahiti, the UAE and Canada is not a serious competition by any standards  who did you have to beat to qualify for it? Fiji?

Well it looks like Australia should beat Spain easily!

Over the years you've been wasting your time over Football nobodies Cyprus. You should follow Cyprus Rugby instead because at least in that sport Cyprus has won 23 games on the gritty whereas the Football Team would be lucky to win one game a year!

The fact that you insist on comparing yourself to half an island with 700k inhabitants only emphasizes the insecurity you guys feel about this team...

In fact! Tasmania is about 550k people and it's Australian....what do you reckon? Cyprus - Tasmania 27-0 ?

Btw aloneftis and charalambides both come from the Bundesliga before returning to Cyprus, Efrem played for Celtic, Charalambous plays in the Romanian first division and Christofi plays for Sion in Switzerland with one of your guys. There's more but you can see for yourself.

It was Get Real that was poking fun saying that Cyprus could beat Australia.

I am sure the Aussies don't rate Cyprus as a serious contender or challenge which is why they don't seek friendlies with Cyprus.
