"trial" postponed ... and again for the lamest of excuses...
News from a friend on this morning's events... (photos to follow) ...
"... The trial of the Turkish Cypriot couple who were arrested in June 2013 for flying 3 Republic of Cyprus flags outside their shop in Famagusta has once again, as expected, been postponed till 25th July 2014.
Koray Basdogrultmaci and Cinel Husseyin appeared before the Famagusta court on charges of Public Disorder and Non Recognition of the TRNC. The couple have been going backwards and forwards to court since last year and this was the 6th time they had appeared before a judge. The reason for the postponement was the judge said due to local elections they were too busy to hear the case. They were asked if they pleaded guilty to the charges and they said no, the case was then set for 25th July 2014.
The couple had receive threats from an ultra nationalist group who had said they would have a counter protest outside the Famagusta court. They reported this to the SBA Police, the Republic of Cyprus Police in Dhyrenia and the Police in the north. They provided evidence which had been collected on the group’s internet site and the result was they were given a police warning that they would be arrested if they caused trouble which deterred the nationalists from turning up.
There was a very heavy Police presence outside and inside the court, approximately 150 seen by eye witnesses. People entering the courtroom were frisked by the Police and I was personally asked to remove my neckchief which was a small Cyprus flag. The judge quickly said the case would be postponed.
Outside the court Basdogrultmaci and Husseyin held the Cyprus flags and placards showing photos of Tayyip Erdogan sitting in front of the Cyprus flag and the Turkish flag together with the ex Minister of Education in the occuped north, Kemal Durust at the Mediterranean Games in 2013.
“In Turkey people find that it is their right to fly their flag, is it wrong to fly the Cyprus flag in my motherland? I didn’t take down the Turkish flag, I just raised the Cyprus one in Cyprus, where is the crime in that? These charges should be dismissed” said Basdogrultmaci and added “we are just standing up for our human rights by flying the Cyprus flag. If we are mistaken and found guilty then Erdogan should be arrested too, just look at him at the Mediterranean Games in 2013 sitting next to the Cyprus flag, he didn’t object to its presence there.”
When the Police in the north were asked why there was such a heavy presence of security inside and outside the court, they said it was for everybody’s safety but refused to comment any further. The case continues next month. ..."
