Turkey's Military Command Wants Varosha!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Turkey's Military Command Wants Varosha!

Postby MrH » Mon Jun 02, 2014 4:12 pm

Turkey's military Gen Force's Commander is to use the Varosha in a completely new directive as a Military base should a Cyprus solution not be found before Jan 2015. Although this has been in the pipeline for some time, it's the first time that such a high ranking Turkish Commander under the AKP has openly said the following:

"As most of the Varosha (Maras) in the TRNC originally belongs to the Vakiflar and that all attempts in offering this area as a good will gesture as part of a Comprehensive agreement since the high level agreements in the late 1970s has failed, we are in the process of initiating a feasible study into converting this entire area as an extension of Turkey's eastern Naval and land force's assets in light of the recent developments and security concerns surrounding the latest Gas find around the island. In line with the cease-fire agreement and a lack of movement in the direction of finding such an amicable Comprehensive settle to the Cyprus Problem, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus's integration and partnering with the Republic of Turkey at an international level will officially commence from January 2015".

Get off the meth,

Watch this space for the latest on the Turkish Commander's visit to the Varosha this year. All Journalists from the Hurriyet Newspaper are now preparing to cover this story. If you think about the Varosha's geopolitical location, it actually makes sense! A beach side resort it can now never become, the building can easily be converted to military residence and the land and sea front being one of the most closest point to Turkey's eastern Airforce's base would be ideal.

Nothing of what you write makes sense but then again, most Turks don't.

A submarine base in a bay with mean depth of 1.5 meters!!! We are all on some kind of strong drink today!!!

The issue of Famagusta goes beyond the narrow limits of the Cyprus issue. It has become an international cause celebre. Attempting to deny the return of the city to its rightful owners will raise a huge international outcry.

As for the status of the land, Evkaf etc, it is helpful to refer to the writings of Thompson who described the area as it was during his visit in 1878. The Christian population was EXCLUDED from the walled city, relegated to living outside the walls of what was then regarded as "prime" property, and left to live in the fever infested swamps, euphemistically called a suburb, a Varush. Using the Ottoman records the British formalised the Land Registry and there were never any objections to title deeds re Evkaf etc for a century.

As a boy growing up in Famagusta I recall that we GCs were excluded from entering the walled city. The exclusion started well before the 1963 clashes. Just once, as guests of a British officer, we got into old walled Famagusta in 1957 for a visit that lasted about an hour. After that we were limited to visits to the ramparts and the Lion's Gate.

Your flight must be delayed for a very long time given all the jokes you've been posting just recently ;)
