Language Workshops, free.

Postby repulsewarrior » Sat May 03, 2014 4:43 pm

i include this article on language workshops in the Tourism section, because it is free, and i imagine a fun way to learn a little about language, in Cyprus:

http://cyprus-mail.com/2014/05/03/language-transfer-launches-cyprus-project/

The project will offer free workshops and downloadable audio courses in Greek, Turkish and the Cypriot dialects, as well as facilitating language exchange activities on the island.

The method teaches conversational ability in a new language in record time – in a matter of hours, she said.

To participate in the Cyprus Project or donate to help cover the costs of workshops, visit http://www.languagetransfer.org

I can understand teaching Greek and Turkish but how do you teach the Cypriot dialect?....for instance how does one translate "amemavroshilogyreuke"...a phrase often used by Cypriots

That's really interesting because Hellenistic Greek (which the Cypriot dialect resembles hugely) was written without any spaces between the words! :D

...indeed, writing this way adds a whole new meaning to reading between the lines, and double meanings, where a line of letters can be divided in more than one way.

But those don't use the Greek alphabet, do they? That's an extraneous comparison because the form of the languages is completely different. You might as well mention hieroglyphics.
