Greek lessons in the north?

A PROPOSAL has been mooted to make Greek obligatory in primary schools in the north, Afrika newspaper has reported.

Turkish Cypriot daily Diyalog also published an interview with ‘education minister’ Mustafa Arabacioglu who expressed his disagreement with a number of new decisions taken by the Turkish Cypriot Educational Council on Saturday.

Arabacioglu said the teaching of Greek could be taken into consideration. However, proposals to remove the ‘oath of allegiance’ to the ‘TRNC’ and the closure of the Theological School was out of question.

The Turkish Cypriot Educational Council agreed on Saturday to push for the lifting of religious studies from schools as well as the closure of the Islamic Theology College in Mia Milia.

Arabacioglu stormed out of the meeting, Afrika said.

Former chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Ferdi Sabit Soyer criticised Arabacioglu, saying that even in Turkey the same oath (to Turkey) had been removed from schools.
