Mr Houston’s statement, released by the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, said signals detected by a RAAF AP-3c Orion aircraft were “not related” to a black box.

Mass confusion ensued as many thought Mr Houston was contradicting the Prime Minister.

It was made worse when a spokeswoman for the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, which is running the search, confirmed Mr Houston’s remarks that there had been “no major breakthrough”.

Latest report!

Australian Prime Minister has just met with China's President and given him the latest information he has from Angus Houston.

Australian PM has confirmed that they have located the Black Box with a "high degree of certainty". He also thanked China for its assistance in the search effort.

Those are Australian PM's words not mine.

Here is the first report confirming Australian PM's briefing to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Search area reduced to a grid that is 10 by 10 kms.

This means the search area is now reduced from 600 sq kms to only 100 sq kms. That area is equivalent to SBA Akrotiri.

If they detect the signal again, then the search area will once again be reduced.

It's really interesting to also note that HMS Echo and HMAS Ocean Shield are basically dead in the water and have been so all day. The position of HMS Echo is especially interesting as HMAS Ocean Shield is slightly outside the smaller search area only a few kms away.

All the other ships are searching for debris some 800 kms to the west.

I posted this earlier but looking at the marine traffic link you can see the outline of the 2 search areas.

There is a vast search area where 10 ships are looking for debris. And about 800 kms east, you will see a small area where the signals have been detected.

This area has been reduced to 100 sq kms now. HMS Echo is in this area along with ADV Ocean Shield. Both have been stationary for the whole day. So the question has to be asked, why these 2 Ships are not doing a lot of searching. Both are moving at 0.5knots which might be just drift? Even if Ocean Shield was towing the detector they would be moving at 2 knots but the ship is just outside the search area even.

Some information about the Bluefin 21 AUV which we should see being deployed in the coming days.

A very capable piece of kit which utilizes INS and minimizes drift to less than 0.1%.

It can operate at 4500m and map the ocean floor 500m on its port and starboard sides when 300m above the ocean floor.

OK it looks like HMS Echo has just parked up outside the small search area and ADV Ocean Shield has entered the area. It looks like ADV Ocean Shield will be towing the ELT Detector all day today.

Meanwhile, 8 ships are searching the larger search area for debris. There is a very heavy Chinese presence there.

Also of some interest is HMAS Toowoomba is underway alongside HMAS Success. HMAS Toowoomba was replenished at sea with stores, and fuel during the night and that is a fascinating process.

Looks like operations continue as per normal. Feel very confident that the Aussies got this well and truly licked which I always knew they would! Believe me when I say that Australia is capable of ANYTHING because time and time again, this country just performs miracles! The ADF really is the best. What a country! :D
