I travelled with MAS from KL many times in the 90s… it’s a common route for Cypriots who come and go to Australia where I was living back then.
On one occasion at the KL airport my 3 year old daughter was picked up by a local woman who started rapidly walking away from us! I had to run after her and grab her by the shoulder to get my kid back! No doubt she would’ve traded my daughter for a fee had she gotten away with her.
There are some very dodgy characters in that part of the world and one should be very careful when travelling there especially with young kids.

That was my previous theory. Now I have another.
It was a robbery on the air. They simply stole the contents. Then they trashed both the plane and the dead in the Indian Ocean.
I mean we ve seen robberies on cars, robberies on trucks, robberies on trains, why not on a plane?
NB. I wouldn't rule out a combination of the 2 theories

Normerly there are no aircraft at all at Diego Garcia unless something is going on in the Gulf. At the most there might be one US or Australian Orion, C130, or Galaxy on a 30 minute fuel stop. That's on a busy day.
