The UN Security Council does what it says on the can... Security - as determined by the Perm Members, who will act in their own individual interests whilst trying in their strange way keep a lid on things... yes, we should expect much more.

Anyways, Pres A addressed a conference of the European People's Party and made a pretty understated reference to the situation in the Crimea and the analogous CY case.

Here's a bit of what he said...

"... What is happening in the Ukraine highlights what Cyprus has suffered over the past 40 years during Turkish military occupation, President Anastasiades told the European People’s Party summit on Saturday. “As I refer to Ukraine, I am prompted to mention that what is happening in this country brings to mind what Cyprus has suffered, where one third of its territory has been under military occupation for the last 40 years,” he said..."

Don't worry about Anastasiades. Nobody takes him seriously anymore. He will probably say the complete opposite next time...

In the wake of today's Illegal Referendum in the Crimea district of the Ukraine, a correspondent asks...

" ... Will "Russian Republic of Crimea" now become a new "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", recognised by only one country? ... "

Or as one commentator remarks:

“You can declare the front room of your house an independent state, but if no one recognizes it, such a declaration is meaningless,”

Unlike the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Russians did not bomb cities and villages in Crimea, did not murder and rape, have not forced thousands of Crimeans to abandon their lands and properties, they have not created thousands of refugees, they have not caused the disappearance of hundreds and neither have they landed 40 thousand troops on Crimean soil.

There is for me no viable analogy with the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.

Ooooh... you're being very, very short-sighted Milti....

The Russians did all of that and the troops that are there today, in their tens of thousands, are Russian troops, let's not be fooled by the lack of insignias. Further, the navy blockading the ports are ships of the Russian Navy.

The history of the Occupied Crimea part of the Ukraine during and soon after WW2 was of massive displacement of the indigenous population by GR's friend Mr Stalin.

Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Moslem Tatars, the then majority population, forcibly evicted from their homes, turned in to Refugees, thrown in to cattle trucks and moved to central Asia and with that came great dislocation, massive famine, great suffering and tremendous loss of life.

In their place, Russian-speaking Illegal Settlers were shipped in or encouraged to move in to secure Russian strategic interests.

Violent Ethnic Cleansing and forced demographic changes are the history there just as it is on CY.
