However, it must be accepted that the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine was not a homogenous entity that represented purely the territory inhabited by Ukranian people, and a significant portion of this republic was populated by ethnic Russians. Crimea, in particular, was appended to Ukraine at a later stage and has never had any sort of ethnic or historical ties with Ukraine. Crimea is also of great strategic importance to Russia, which has important bases there. I would say that a territory for recognition deal is called for between Russia and Ukraine, in which Crimea and possibly other ethnically Russian parts of the former republic are ceded to Russia and in return for which Russia respects the right of the rest of Ukraine to move out of its orbit. This has to be the common sense approach.

I fully agree with that Tim. What a sensible level headed approach ............ this will have to be the basis for a resolution anyway because the US would have to enter the Black Sea to launch their cruise missile 'solution' as they were prepared to in Syria. The US/UK are in no position to start wagging their fingers at Russia, when you consider their histories of invasion and regime change to protect their 'National (mainly commercial?) interests'. At least the Russians haven't softened them up first with a bombing campaign.
As a Brit living in Cyprus, if the same situation arose here I would be very appreciative if the UK put troops on the ground to protect not only their bases but us ethnic Brits as well and prevent a descent into violence.

Correct me if I am wrong but if you walk around larnaca you will still see names of streets that the ottomans had changed to for example Mustafa pasha street. 1974 is only referred to as a invasion by GC s. All other country's refer to it for what it is which is intervention. I don't care much for what you think or what you believe. All I know is that TC s will be safe under the protection of turkey and what led to 1974 will never happen again.
This is back to front. The situation did arise in Cyprus but conflict was purposefully created to plunge the island in to violence so the US/UK can take advantage. Cypriots don't appreciate it.
Do you support the rights of Cypriots to self determination, democracy and freedom etc.?
British foreign policy did not and does not (I think something is missing here?) and brought about the bases and the Turkish invasion and occupation. Cypriots don't appreciate it.
Would you prefer Russia invade and occupy Anatolia next and to send a few missiles towards the bases to soften us Brits up?

You call the agreements of 1960 independence? Your a joker.
You think that the results of the illegal invasion shouldn't be reversed? Your a joker.
You think Britain is actually a guarantor of the sovereign integrity and independence of Cyprus? what a joker.
You think Britain did not get those bases in Cyprus through blackmail, subterfuge and military conquest? your a joker.
