The chief negotiators of the two communities will on Monday begin exploring the establishment of a working group tasked with writing up the laws of a federal, reunited state, government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides revealed on Thursday.
On Monday, negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami are scheduled to meet again in the presence of the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide.
The meeting will also be attended by legal experts from both sides, for an initial discussion of how to go about establishing the joint panel drafting the future state’s federal laws.
“It has been a longstanding demand of the Greek Cypriot side that the laws must be ready from Day 1 after a possible settlement, following referenda,” said Christodoulides.
The creation of this panel of experts had been agreed by the two sides some time ago, he added.
The mammoth task of writing up the law s of a new federal republic is expected to take several months.
The next meeting between the leaders of the two communities, President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, is set for Friday, October 30th.
Meanwhile in a post on twitter Eide said he had a “promising” meeting with property experts from both sides earlier this week.
“A promising negotiators mtg. w/ property experts, constructively building common ground on a crucial issue. #Cyprus,” he tweeted.
