The Role of America

Postby Demonax » Sun Feb 09, 2014 2:40 pm

Reports are circulating that the US has played a major role in restarting negotiations. In particular, the Republic made certain requests which have led to an increased American involvement:

1. The final text of the joint communique was drafted by Greek Cypriot negotiators and endorsed by the US.
2. Alexander Downer to be 'retired' from his post.
3. The US to guarantee the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.
4. The US to push for the return of Varosha.
5. The US to guarantee and endorse Cyprus's EEZ and it's right to exploit its energy resources.
6. US financial support to restart the Cypriot economy.
7. Cyprus to be the 51st state of America (I made that one up!)

And in return what do we have to give the US?

Seems we will all be bending over soon.

8. U.S officers and sailors volunteer to help out in the local community by cleaning up the yard of the Theotokos Foundation.
9. U.S Marines and sailors including the ship's Chaplain, volunteer at the soup kitchen operated by the Church of Cyprus and the Metropolitan of Limassol.

Howdy pardner. Yes, there are reports that Turkey asked for the 1960 guarantees to be included in the joint communique in exchange for single sovereignty. But the GCs refused and the US accepted the draft as submitted by the GCs.

Yes and also explains why Downer has been nowhere to be seen.

Got a sudden urge for some Sarsaparilla.

Cyprus' new guarantor powers: USA, Russia and Israel. All free to come and go as they wish.

Perhaps the US has at last realised that the right to interfere in sovereign nations affairs with military force is contrary to the UN Charter but it had to wait until after it had invaded Iraq and Afghanistan in order not to appear hypocritical. :)

Maybe the Yanks will question other aspects of the Zurich agreement at the same time and persuade Turkey to accept a truly democratic constitution. The US is probably one of the few countries that could offer genuine guarantees without having to resort to armed force, I seem to recall it threatened to bankrupt the UK when it wouldn't play ball in the Suez crisis - watch out Turkey!
