What he advocates I think is that TC give up their Turkishness and GC give up their Greekness and REPLACE that with just Cypriot. In many ways his view in this regard are not dissimilar to those of GR here. Nor is this an approach I would not support, as if it was truly done then it would meet my personal 'acid test' of would such a solution have allowed TC to resist the imposition of enosis on them against their will, in that there would be no TC to be imposed on and no Cypriot who was just Cypriot would ever seek to hand control of their country to a foreign power.

However what the likes of Bill want to believe he advocates is TC give up their Turkishness and GC just carry on as ever.

Thanks for correcting me. I meant that CTP of course, the CHP is the main opposition party in Turkey.

I watched the interview with the two candidates from the Turkish Cypriot revolutionary left Socialist Party of Cyprus yesterday evening on the Biz/Emeis programme. One of them claimed that many Turkish Cypriot potential voters will find themselves disenfranchised because, when they applied for their RoC identity cards, they gave their pre-1974 addresses rather than the addresses of the exchange properties (as they have been called) that were assigned to them - surely the patriotic thing to do - and the present voting arrangement for Turkish Cypriots not living in the government-controlled areas requires them to have an address in the other part of Cyprus. If this is so, it is surely a mistake.

Dear dthkie Bill, why do you think I should vote for Şener Levent rather than 'Action' (ΔΡΑΣΙ/EYLEM)? The latter appeal to me as the only platform fielding candidates from both communities.

Oh Gawd... !!! Someone put the above through Google Translate for us please (and put Sordo through a mincer.)

Speaking of translations, perhaps Maxi and "g"IG, if they're around, could translate this piece of Sener Levent's Manifesto for us please (and give us their views on it please)...

He is right Bill,

Refugees to their homes, no zones and a democratic unitary state.

This is not dissimilar to what a lot of people have been advocating for a long time. It is right but giving the settlers and the carpetbaggers or those who where born in Cyprus post 1974 Cypriot citizenship is not. This throws a spanner in the works. One child born in Cyprus can quickly turn into five people with 'rights' to stay because you cannot split up a family.

How is he going to achieve all this? Consider, he is completely the opposite of popular amongst the TC and the rest of "TRNC electorate".

Does anyone have their (action) manifesto?

OK, it was news to me that Şener Levent stood for TRNC president in 2000 (odd that he would stand for a post whose legality he rejects), but I still think it is disingenuous to interpret his vote then as the sole measure of his support among the Turkish Cypriot community. I see with horror that the two fundamentalist chauvinist partitionists, Denktash and Eroğlu, garnered more than 73% of the vote, which shows that things have changed in the community since then. Surely most people who opposed the partionists would have voted for the candidate best placed to oppose them, rather than seeing their votes wasted on a marginal candidate.

Şener Levent's Afrika has a high circulation among Turkish Cypriot newspapers, and I saw figures a few years ago showing it to be the best-selling newspaper, which suggests that his ideas strike a chord with quite a few Turkish Cypriots.

No, but in the interview they struck me as being left wingers who are in touch with contemporary ideas.

A friend of mine, who I consider left wing went to their election rally in Nicosia the other day. he is quite active in the political scene.

He asked a few questions about how they are going to achieve the things they were talking about but their answers were poor. He called them a bunch of 'hippies' living on the fringes of reality.
