Schools review please.

Postby Susan66 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 3:22 pm

Hello, I am considering placing my 3 children 16,12 & 9 in one of these 2 schools. They both sound very nice.....Does anyone know more about these schools that would help in my decision.....I am situated in the Middle East at present.

Silver line Private school Limassol
The learning centre (TLC) St. George (Agios Georgios) Peyia.

Many thanks.

I cannot talk about the Learning Centre at St Georges Peyia, but I would be reluctant to put my children in Silver Line,,,, (I know of some of the staff there from when they worked at the late and now unlamented Red Dragon and was less than impressed - maybe things have improved from Red Dragon days.....check who has what qualifications ......last I heard some teachers at Silver line were non teaching qualified people previously employed as class assistants in course of completing teacher training promoted to fill gaps..maybe they are now all properly qualified.)

(BTW re Red Dragon did the missing 1/4 million or so turn up? Thats an interesting tale with stories of lies and deception, the school secretary running off with her lesbian lover at about the time the money supposedly went missing, (and no she was not the thief though she was blamed) allegations of deliberate tampering with computer records, etc.)

Hi Susan
The two school are in different parts of Cyprus. Silverline is in Limassol and TLC in Peyia near Paphos. Don't be fooled by the St Georges name in the address as it has nothing to do with the old place that closed a couple of years ago. The Learning Centre (we call it TLC) has a great new building and the owners are very committed to what they do. I don't have children there myself but many of my friends do and they are very happy with the way it's set up. The owners live locally too which is reassuring and they have years of experience in UK schools. All of the teachers are native English speakers and as I understand it the fees include everything. I know that the school teaches Greek to all of the children but they work towards IGCSE exams and A levels. The best thing is to go and look because it's the only way to judge if it's right for your children. They have an open day on 9th February so why not give them a ring and go see for yourself.

Dear Susan,

With regards to Silverline school, I am a teacher there, so can tell you that we are a small, well resourced private school located in Trachoni, just outside of Limassol. We offer the english curriculum to children form reception age up to A- level. There is a wide variety of after school activities and homework club, up until 5pm. We also offer a summer school with a wide range of activities going on. Class sizes are small, and we have interactive whiteboards in every room. All our teachers are qualified and experienced. We also have experienced classroom assistants and staff to support students who need extra help in some subjects.

In response to puffik post, I must say that Silverline School is a completely different entity/business from the Red Dragon School. I feel it is to our credit that we support the continuing proffessional development of the staff, supporting classroom assistants who take IPGCE courses. I also find it a pity that our growing school, which receives good feedback from parents, is being smeared with the rumour and innuendo which surrounded the closure of the Red Dragon school.

If any potential parents, or former Red Dragon parents were to take the time to visit us and see what we are doing here, I am sure they would be impressed.

I write as a representative of Silverline Private School (SPS). Firstly I would like to make it clear that SPS has no affiiliation with the former Red Dragon School (RDS)with the exception that on closure the majority of RDS staff were offered employment here as they had proven to be extremely dedicated professionals.

It is true that RDS employed two unqualified teachers who were at the time working towards their IPGCE with Buckingham University. When they moved to SPS the new leadership team placed them in classes with experienced qualified teachers who they could work alongside to aid in their professional development. To answer Puffik - they qualified in June with exceptional results.

We are more than happy to invite parents to the school and in fact welcome prospective parents to vist and leave their children for a taster day. It is a real shame that unlike 'eddieismecyp' Puffik is unable to express an unbiased opinion as I am sure 'Susan' would have been able to make a much more informed decision if this had been the case.

To Puffik if you would like to contact the school directly, again I would be more than happy to discuss with you any concerns about our school.

Hi Susan,

I'd be most interested to hear if you came to a decision? If so, I hope everything is going well and you and your family are enjoying life in Cyprus.

My daughter was in a similar position. She moved to Peyia not so long ago and it took a lot of time and careful thinking to decide on a school. We looked at a number of private schools in the Paphos region - ISOP, TLC, American Academy. She opted for Aspire, also in Peyia, in the end. It's one we hadn't heard of before, but were recommended by a friend of a friend and after visiting just knew it was the right place.

If you still haven't made the move my advice would be to visit the schools. They speak for themselves when you're actually there.

I understand teachers at American Academy in Paphos are not being properly paid...
